About The Position

Axon's San Francisco office currently houses a mechanical engineering team and prototype shop which augments the engineering teams and prototyping facilities at our headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ. The San Francisco Machinist role would not only support the local ME team, but also augment the overall prototyping capacity of the engineering organization. The San Francisco shop is a versatile, 1500 square foot space with a Tormach CNC 3-axis milling machine, a Hardinge toolroom lathe, and a variety of other prototyping and testing equipment. With your input, we intend to acquire a more capable CNC mill, ideally a HAAS machine to leverage the existing support and processes from our other facilities. Responsibilities will be split between part fabrication and overall shop management.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5-7 years background/experience in a dynamic, fast paced CNC machining environment, including shop management and maintenance responsibilities.
  • Proficiently work in CAD/CAM software (Fusion 360 and PTC Creo preferred) to produce files for machining.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings or other mechanical communication documents.
  • Design/fabricate mechanical assemblies as it relates to Axon's product development needs.
  • Provide design advice to other members of the team when needed.
  • Use analytical and problem-solving skills to develop effective and efficient machining programs.
  • Basic mechanical engineering knowledge.
  • Assist with other product development tasks including product testing and/or operation of other department equipment as needed.
  • Math skills to make engineering calculations where needed.
  • Effective oral and written technical communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint.)
  • Adhere to all EHS and safety procedures.
  • Successfully pass Axon's mandatory internal ATF training.
  • Self-motivated and and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Attention to detail is a must.

Responsibilities

  • Create high value, low to mid quantity machined parts/assemblies primarily for prototyping and testing in a product development environment.
  • Devise efficient machining solutions from simple to complex machining challenges.
  • Ability to see machining conflicts at the design level before programming.
  • Communicate issues at the engineering level to ensure correct part fabrication.
  • Leverage various CNC machines using Fusion 360 CAD/CAM software (or manual programming methods), selecting appropriate cutting tools, developing and create work holding solutions, conduct test runs and inspections.
  • Troubleshoot machine operations, optimize toolpaths, machine set ups, general machine maintenance as well as adapting to changing priorities.
  • Coordinate with other Axon shop teams to efficiently load-share part-fabrication requests.
  • Manage and maintain equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, force-deflection stands, high-speed cameras, band-saws, drill presses, programable ovens, gauge pins, gauge blocks, calipers, height gauges, micrometers, belt sanders and a variety of other bench-top and handheld tools.
  • Maintain overall shop organization and implement improvements.
  • Purchase and maintain material and component inventory.
  • Train and assist the engineers in the safe use of the shop and equipment.
  • Assist in outsourcing the fabrication of parts that cannot be made in-house.
  • Execute, develop and document standards for running a clean, safe and efficient shop.
  • Work with other Axon facility teams to maintain OSHA safety standards and hazardous waste compliance.
