Axon’s San Francisco office currently houses a mechanical engineering team and prototype shop which augments the engineering teams and prototyping facilities at our headquarters in Scottsdale, AZ. The San Francisco Machinist role would not only support the local ME team, but also augment the overall prototyping capacity of the engineering organization. The San Francisco shop is a versatile, 1500 square foot space with a Tormach CNC 3-axis milling machine, a Hardinge toolroom lathe, and a variety of other prototyping and testing equipment. With your input, we intend to acquire a more capable CNC mill, ideally a HAAS machine to leverage the existing support and processes from our other facilities. Responsibilities will be split between part fabrication and overall shop management. 50% Prototype Machinist In a product development environment, create high value, low to mid quantity machined parts/assemblies primarily for prototyping and testing. Parts are typically small (fit in a hand) with tight tolerances, made from a variety of metals and plastics. Devise efficient machining solutions from simple to complex machining challenges. Ability to see machining conflicts at the design level before programming. Communicate issues at the engineering level to ensure correct part fabrication. Creatively leverage various CNC machines using Fusion 360 CAD/CAM software (or manual programming methods), selecting appropriate cutting tools, developing and create work holding solutions, conduct test runs and inspections. Work independently to troubleshoot machine operations, optimize toolpaths, machine set ups, general machine maintenance as well as adapting to changing priorities. Coordinate with other Axon shop teams to efficiently load-share part-fabrication requests. 50% Shop Manager Apply hands-on experience using, managing and maintaining other equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, force-deflection stands, high-speed cameras, band-saws, drill presses, programable ovens, gauge pins, gauge blocks, calipers, height gauges, micrometers, belt sanders and a variety of other bench-top and handheld tools. Maintain overall shop organization and implement improvements. Purchase and maintain material and component inventory. Train and assist the engineers in the safe use of the shop and equipment. Assist in outsourcing the fabrication of parts that cannot be made in-house. Execute, develop and document standards for running a clean, safe and efficient shop.
