About The Position

Under the direction of the Department of Physics leadership staff, the Senior Machinist will operate a variety of stationary tools to produce one-of-a-kind prototype and beta components for research apparatus. These components will be in service both on the Princeton campus and at remote locations.

Requirements

  • Must be able to perform the essential duties satisfactorily
  • Consider safety as a priority for yourself and others in active promotion of a safe work environment; understand necessary PPE
  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational technology trade schools or other certification a plus
  • Five or more (5+) verifiable years of experience in a prototyping or production machine shop operating knee mills, engine lathes, drill presses, and manual threading tools
  • Extensive knowledge and experience regarding the tool speeds and feed rates necessary to produce acceptable parts from brass, copper, steel and stainless steel
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, dimensions, and tolerances
  • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills; have the ability to both interact and create a positive and good working relationship with colleagues
  • Committed to the beliefs of customer service/satisfaction, quality control, high personal standards/ethics, and inclusion
  • Possess technology skills and proficiency with personal computers
  • Established track record in good attendance, avoidance of conflict and willingness to accept criticism to make efforts for own improvement

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to/proficiency with SolidWorks and computer-aided manufacturing software
  • Torch brazing and gas-tungsten arc welding experience.
  • Experience working with specialized materials especially OFHC copper and titanium

Responsibilities

  • Machine Tool Operation – Utilize typical stationary shop tools to cut/form/finish desired parts; perform measurements and inspection of machined parts
  • Fabrication Tool Operation– Run a variety of saws, presses, shears and sheet metal brakes
  • Interpret Drawings and Sketches - Apply written guidance and verbal interactions with client in the production of prototypes
