About The Position

This position serves as Senior Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor II in the Los Alamitos Recreation and Community Services Department and performs a variety of duties including pool lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, and lifesaving skills in addition to other duties as assigned. Approximately (10-40) hours per week depending on season/program with a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and selected holidays for City events or programs. There are currently several openings for this position.

Requirements

  • Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification by first day of employment
  • Must obtain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification by first day of employment
  • Must be at least 16 years of age (if under 18, must have a valid permit to work)
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work
  • One year minimum prior experience in aquatics or swimming is required
  • Currently attending or graduated from high school
  • Applicants must possess American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate by first day of employment
  • Applicants must possess American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate by first day of employment
  • Ability to pass an in-water demonstration of aquatic skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in aquatics, recreation, and/or other related areas is desirable
  • College course work with a major in recreation or similar field is preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of current American Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor requirements
  • Past experience and enjoyment of working with people of all ages and ability to be flexible, energetic, outgoing, creative
  • Strong communication skills to direct staff and maintain a cooperative and friendly working relationship with employees, and the general public

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, implement, and coordinate current and new aquatics programs, activities and special events
  • Teach, communicate and demonstrate all the essential swim strokes and skills to participants in and around the pool
  • Maintain the ability to create and follow lesson plans
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, while being able to evaluate the progress of swim students
  • Think independently and problem-solve with minimal supervision and communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Maintain the water, deck, bleachers, locker rooms, building, offices and equipment at the pool for cleanliness, safety and appropriate usage
  • Perform all duties of a Senior Lifeguard and/or Water Safety Instructor II including enforcing of pool policies and regulations with pool patrons and the general public
  • Oversee aquatics facility including water quality, temperature, general pool maintenance, and safety and cleanliness of the facility
  • Communicate with contracted pool maintenance companies, City staff and partnering agency staff
  • Handle all emergency situations effectively and administer first aid, CPR, AED and rescues as necessary
  • Convey and communicate program and facility objectives, act as a customer service liaison and diffuse patron concerns with the general public, school district personnel and City staff
  • Perform routine reception duties including telephone support and related customer services activities
  • Communicate effectively verbally to participants, parents and community members while being able to evaluate the progress of swim students
  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing to supervisor, staff and participants
  • Be enthusiastic and maintain a high level of customer service
  • Be able to lift over their head, twist & turn a minimum of 20 pounds
  • Be able to stand for a long period of time either indoors or outdoors
