We are looking for teammates who are: Strong communicators who can explain complex legal issues clearly to a wide range of audiences Skilled litigators who bring sound judgment and confidence to high-stakes regulatory and tax matters Analytical thinkers who can interpret statutes, case law, and procedural rules Collaborative partners who work well with internal teams and external agencies Supportive mentors who enjoy guiding and developing junior attorneys and staff Very knowledgeable on the law of S.C., court rules, and litigation procedures What you will do: You will serve as a senior attorney handling complex tax and regulatory litigation, advising agency leadership, and providing subject-matter expertise on SC’s sales tax matters. You will also support the growth of the Legal team by mentoring junior attorneys and contributing to legal projects across the agency. Primary job duties include: Litigating tax and regulatory matters in State and Federal trial and appellate courts, with a focus on complex regulatory issues and sales tax cases Drafting Department Determinations, orders, and related pleadings for protested cases Serving as the agency’s subject-matter expert on complex regulatory matters and litigation strategies Providing leadership, guidance, and professional mentorship to junior Litigation attorneys, including reviewing work product as necessary Advising the Chief Legal Counsel, agency divisions, and other governmental entities (including SLED) on legal procedures, interpretation of legislation, and other matters of law Position may require some travel/overnight travel as necessary.
