The role supports small-scale, complex research projects; organizes research materials and supplies; maintains equipment and job-related apparatus; and provides technical guidance to staff on problems, procedures, and special projects. The position involves assembling millimeter-scale components in a cleanroom, developing and installing laboratory operating procedures, and developing or modifying test methods. The specialist selects procedures for data collection and handling, and develops or arranges computer programs for data conversions and statistical treatment. The role also independently operates complex scientific equipment to develop critical research data; designs or collaborates on sophisticated research equipment; and evaluates equipment performance, making design changes or developing new approaches to its use. The specialist coordinates service support, including equipment repair, requisitioning supplies and research materials, and minor construction. The role also recommends expenditures for major laboratory equipment and construction and performs other duties as assigned.
