About The Position

Assisted Living and Social Services (ALSS) provides supports for seniors, families, and communities, helps Albertans access disability services, continuing care, financial supports, affordable housing, and other social-based programs. The Ministry supports Albertans through a person-centered, integrated service delivery model that recognizes the unique circumstances, experiences and strengths of individuals and families. The Strategic Policy, Priority Coordination and Appeals (SPPCA) Branch provides specialized expertise and leadership in intergovernmental relations strategic policy development and agency governance; supports and navigates government decision-making processes as well as legislative and regulatory planning and review; and provides appeal secretariat supports. The Intergovernmental Relations Unit provides leadership related for four federal/provincial/territorial forums relevant to ALSS, provides strategic advice on the development of intergovernmental policies, including issues identification and analysis of issues relevant to the department and the Government of Alberta. SPPCA is seeking a Senior Intergovernmental Policy Advisor to join the Intergovernmental Relations Unit, to play a key role in supporting ALSS in engaging with partners across the country through research, policy analysis, stakeholder coordination and providing strategic advice.

Requirements

  • University graduation in a related field (e.g., political science, international relations, public administration, law) plus a minimum of four (4) years progressively responsible related experience.
  • Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and a strong work ethic, with the ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to distill complex information into clear, actionable advice for senior decision-makers.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to quickly understand new issues, identify implications for Alberta, and provide practical recommendations.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple high-priority files and deliver results under tight timelines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build productive relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, and government partners from diverse backgrounds and jurisdictions.
  • Political acuity and professionalism when working on sensitive issues involving senior officials, elected representatives, and international partners.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with key stakeholders for the purpose of gaining intelligence and strategically positioning Alberta's interests.
  • Participate in the development of intergovernmental initiatives by analyzing interprovincial and departmental policy documents, developing briefing materials, and providing policy advice and direction to the Minister and Deputy Minister.
  • Facilitate the coordination and preparation of briefing materials for Ministers' and Deputy Ministers' meetings/teleconferences.
  • Monitor and manage intergovernmental relations issues and prepare draft briefing and correspondence that assist in defining Government of Alberta policy positions that serve to preserve and promote provincial interests.
  • Conduct research, monitor media and accumulate intelligence on international, national, and cross-jurisdictional related issues with relevance to Alberta.
