About The Position

The Department of Biology at the University of Rochester is seeking to fill a non-tenure track, instructional faculty position in Introductory Biology at the rank of Lecturer. This full-time, nine-month position begins August 2026 and includes benefits. The primary responsibilities involve teaching two major courses, Principles of Biology I (BIOL 110) and Principles of Biology II (BIOL 111), each with approximately 200 students. Additionally, the role includes overseeing the laboratory accompanying Principles of Biology II (BIOL 111P), which has around 300 students across multiple sections. After the first year, additional duties may be assigned, such as teaching an additional biology course or undergraduate advising. Pending satisfactory performance, candidates may be eligible for the newly established instructional faculty track with multi-year appointments and promotion possibilities.

Requirements

  • PhD in an appropriate area.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching Principles of Biology I (BIOL 110) in the fall (approx. 200 students), covering biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and animal physiology.
  • Teaching Principles of Biology II (BIOL 111) in the spring (approx. 200 students), focusing on evolution, organismal diversity, functional biology, and ecology.
  • Overseeing the laboratory accompanying Principles of Biology II (BIOL 111P) (approx. 300 students), which is taught by undergraduate teaching assistants with support from a teaching lab specialist.
  • Potential for additional duties after the first year, such as teaching an additional biology course (approx. 30-40 students) or undergraduate advising.
