About The Position

General Motors’ Energy Conversion Systems (ECS) team develops and executes propulsion technology. This position is part of the Energy Conversion Management Hardware Organization, within the Traction Inverter & Power Electronics Hardware teams. The Senior High Voltage Power Electronics PCB Designer provides PCB design and layout expertise and ownership for traction inverters and other high-voltage power electronics. The role works closely with PCB Design Release Engineering, Technical Specialists, EMC, Analysis, Manufacturing, and Quality teams. The position leads PCB layout work for existing and new inverters, maintains the PCBA Basis of Design (BOD), and supports a robust, consistent design and release process. The selected candidate is expected to work in a hybrid arrangement, reporting to a specific location at least three times per week or at another frequency directed by their manager. Travel is less than 25%. Relocation benefits may be available to qualifying candidates under company policy. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent industry experience.
  • Professional experience creating and releasing PCBs.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Expert knowledge of IPC standards and their typical implementation.
  • At least 6 years of experience in PCB layout design.
  • Experience with the eCAD Xpedtion tool.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous industry experience in automotive power electronics and ECUs.
  • Strong experience designing multilayer PCB layouts with 4, 6, or 8 layers.
  • At least 8 years of experience executing PCB layout designs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop PCB layout designs for existing and new inverters, collaborate with PCBA engineers, participate in design direction meetings, and foster collaboration with internal and external team members.
  • Maintain the PCBA Basis of Design (BOD) and ensure a robust common process is followed for each PCB design.
  • Create physical PCB layouts by placing and routing components, traces, and other elements to support proper functionality and performance.
  • Maintain a quality process that includes independent PCB reviews, DRC usage, DFM, release-file quality, and peer review of ECAD library parts.
  • Maintain the PCB BOD, including DRC, DFM, and PCB templates; create BOD requirements for new technologies such as HDI and embedded power devices; and maintain the PCB drawing template.
  • Serve as the team’s lead contact for IPC and other industry standards.
  • Select layout technology and processes based on project requirements, application, performance goals, and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Execute low-voltage and MCU layouts, as well as high-voltage component and circuit layouts.
  • Design high-current routing, copper balancing, via-current capacity, thermal relief and heatsink strategies, controlled impedance, and high-speed signal routing.
  • Design grounding, shielding, and return-current management, and incorporate noise-containment methods.
  • Place components with consideration for electrical and thermal performance, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Manage libraries, footprints, constraints, and design rules.
  • Support fabrication, assembly, inspection, test-point, and production-release documentation.
  • Balance workload across PCB designers.
  • Maintain the PCB design release process.

Benefits

  • Relocation benefits are available for candidates who qualify under company policy.
  • GM describes its benefits as supporting employee well-being at work and at home; details are available through its Total Rewards resources.
