About The Position

Energy Conversion Systems (ECS) at General Motors develops and executes propulsion technology. This position is within the Energy Conversion Management Hardware Organization, in the Traction Inverter & Power Electronics Hardware teams. The role provides PCB design and layout expertise and ownership for traction inverters and other high-voltage power electronics, working closely with PCB Design Release Engineering, Technical Specialists, EMC, Analysis, Manufacturing, and Quality. The Senior/Lead PCB Designer develops PCB layouts for existing and new inverters, maintains the PCBA Basis of Design (BOD), and ensures a robust common design process. The role also leads quality and release practices, supports new PCB technologies, and balances workload across PCB designers. The position is categorized as hybrid, with the selected candidate expected to report to a specific location at least three times a week or at another frequency dictated by their manager. Travel is less than 25%. Relocation benefits are available to candidates who qualify under company policy. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent industry experience.
  • Professional experience creating and releasing PCBs.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Expert knowledge of IPC standards and their typical implementation.
  • At least 6 years of working experience in PCB layout design.
  • Experience with the eCAD Xpedtion tool.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous industry experience in automotive power electronics and ECUs.
  • Strong experience designing multilayer PCB layouts (4, 6, or 8 layers).
  • 8 or more years of experience executing PCB layout design.

Responsibilities

  • Develop PCB layout designs for existing and new inverters.
  • Collaborate with PCBA engineers, participate in design-direction meetings, and create a collaborative environment with internal and external team members.
  • Maintain the PCBA BOD and ensure a robust, common process is followed for each PCB design.
  • Create the physical layout of PCBs, including placement and routing of components, traces, and other elements for proper functionality and performance.
  • Maintain a quality process that includes independent PCB reviews, DRC usage, DFM, file-release quality, and peer review of ECAD library parts.
  • Maintain the PCB BOD, including DRC, DFM, and PCB templates, and create BOD requirements for technologies such as HDI and embedded power devices.
  • Maintain the PCB drawing template and serve as the team's lead contact for IPC and other industry standards.
  • Select layout technologies and processes based on project requirements, performance goals, and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Execute low-voltage and MCU layouts, as well as high-voltage component and circuit layouts.
  • Design high-current routing, copper balancing, via-current capacity, and thermal relief/heatsink strategies.
  • Design controlled-impedance and high-speed signal routing.
  • Apply grounding, shielding, return-current management, and noise-containment methods.
  • Place components to support electrical and thermal performance, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Manage libraries, footprints, constraints, and design rules.
  • Support fabrication, assembly, inspection, test-point, and production-release documentation.
  • Balance workload across PCB designers.
  • Maintain the PCB design release process.

Benefits

  • Relocation benefits are available for candidates who qualify under company policy.
  • GM describes well-being support at work and at home and provides Total Rewards resources; specific benefit offerings are not detailed in the posting.
