About The Position

Reporting to the AVP of Finance/Controller, the Senior General Ledger Accountant plays a key role in the month-end close and financial reporting for a fiscal sponsor nonprofit organization with more than $150 million in annual revenue. The position prepares and reviews journal entries, reconciles balance sheet accounts, maintains supporting schedules, and resolves discrepancies to ensure timely and accurate financial statements. The Senior Accountant also supports external audits and Form 990 preparation, assists with grant reconciliations and closeouts, and collaborates across Grants, Financial Services, People & Culture, Fiscal Sponsorship, and Intermediary Programs to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and promote compliance.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a business-related field
Three to five (3–5) years of progressive accounting experience
Experience with month-end close activities and preparing balance sheet account reconciliations
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex, high-volume environment
Ability to consistently meet deadlines, including month-end close and audit deliverables
Basic familiarity with nonprofit accounting concepts; ability to apply policies consistently and ask questions when guidance is needed
Demonstrated ability to analyze activity, identify discrepancies, and research/resolve reconciling items
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
Ability to work collaboratively with program staff and other internal stakeholders
Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality

Nice To Haves

Nonprofit accounting experience, including fund accounting and/or grant accounting
Experience supporting external audits (financial statement audit and/or Form 990), including preparing schedules and responding to auditor inquiries
Experience with fiscal sponsorship and/or intermediary program accounting and reporting
Experience with NetSuite or other ERP accounting software
CPA or progress toward CPA

Responsibilities

Manage month-end close tasks that may include preparing or reviewing journal entries, and ensure transactions follow GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
Handle assigned tasks to meet deadlines and clearly explain to the AVP/Controller to ensure follow-up and resolution of ongoing issues that prevent meeting deadlines.
Prepare timely balance sheet reconciliations, including cash, investments, fixed assets, leases, intercompany/due to-due from, and other general ledger accounts; investigate and resolve reconciling items and ensure appropriate supporting documentation.
Prepare and maintain year-end close support schedules and rollforwards (e.g., fixed assets, leases, prepaid/other accruals) and perform tie-outs to the general ledger to support management reporting, the annual financial statement audit, and Form 990 preparation.
Support the AVP/Controller with external audit and compliance deliverables, including the annual financial statement audit and Form 990, by preparing requested schedules/workpapers, coordinating timely responses to auditor inquiries, and assisting with implementation of audit recommendations as needed.
Support grant closeout activities and grant reconciliations by coordinating with financial and grant service administrators, reviewing supporting documentation, reconciling deferred revenue/receivables, and assisting with final financial reporting to funders.
Provide accounting and reporting support to fiscal sponsorship partners and intermediary program teams as needed, including troubleshooting accounting questions and reviewing journals for appropriate treatment.
Maintain compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting guidance, support consistent revenue recognition and net asset classification, and identify opportunities to strengthen internal controls and accounting processes across projects and programs.
