Senior Full Stack Software Engineer
About The Position
BetterHelp is seeking a seasoned software engineer to develop and deliver full-stack features, products, and applications. The role involves owning features from development through production, writing clean, secure, readable, and scalable code, and contributing to engineering best practices. The engineer will work with internal and external APIs, develop new products in PHP, adapt existing code for scale and integrations, design database schemas, optimize SQL queries, build backend algorithms, and profile and optimize new and legacy code. Frontend work includes CSS and JavaScript and supporting cross-device experiences across mobile, tablet, and desktop. The team uses continuous deployment and an agile approach, and the role also involves collaborating across teams and taking an active interest in the product, mission, and business.
Requirements
- Must be legally able to work in the United States.
- Deep understanding of web development concepts and principles.
- Examples of full-stack projects, including at least one major demonstrable project with frontend code, backend code, and a database.
- Ability to design, develop, and launch a web application from start to finish.
- Ability to learn quickly and independently acquire new skills.
- A get-things-done attitude and eagerness to build something great.
- At least 5 years of web development experience in any stack, solving challenging problems and implementing new features from scratch.
- At least 3 years of SQL experience, including relational database schema design and complex queries.
- Familiarity with web and SQL security best practices.
- Comfort working outside the context of a framework and understanding what is happening behind the scenes.
- Experience using Git in a team environment.

- Work or internship experience in startups.
- Experience with the LAMP or LEMP stack.
Responsibilities
- Develop features end to end and own them through production and beyond.
- Develop best practices and write clean, secure, readable, and scalable code, using object-oriented programming where appropriate.
- Collaborate with engineers and other team members.
- Integrate with and build internal and external APIs.
- Develop new PHP products and modify existing PHP code to support scale and integrations with technologies and APIs.
- Write and optimize SQL queries and design database schemas.
- Create and code complex backend algorithms.
- Profile and optimize new and legacy code.
- Use CSS and JavaScript to implement functionality for new products.
- Build with Bootstrap 3, jQuery, HTML5, CSS3, and other open-source technologies.
- Design for mobile, tablet, desktop, and cross-platform use.
- Ship frequently in an agile environment with continuous deployment.
- Contribute to the product, mission, and success beyond assigned development tasks.
