About The Position

This is a fully remote, independent contractor consulting opportunity supporting an advanced AI training and mechanical-design project. The Senior FreeCAD Engineer will create, modify, validate, and document detailed parametric CAD models and mechanical assemblies, applying engineering standards for manufacturability, dimensional accuracy, model integrity, and technical documentation. Work may include parts, assemblies, technical drawings, validation tasks, and manufacturing-oriented design scenarios. Project scope, workload, modelling requirements, and quality standards may change with project needs. The role requires strong expertise in parametric CAD modelling, mechanical engineering, assembly design, GD&T, Design for Manufacturing, technical drawings, engineering QA, and CAD model validation. Python scripting may be used to automate CAD workflows and improve efficiency and reproducibility, but it is not mandatory. No prior AI-training or model-evaluation experience is required. Work must not use confidential or proprietary information belonging to an employer, client, institution, or other third party.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience in mechanical engineering, product design, industrial engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong focus on parametric CAD modelling.
  • Advanced proficiency in FreeCAD or comparable parametric CAD platforms.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical-design fundamentals.
  • Practical knowledge of GD&T and Design for Manufacturing principles.
  • Experience creating production-oriented technical drawings and engineering documentation.
  • Strong assembly-design and component-integration skills.
  • Experience conducting engineering QA and validating CAD models against specifications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal technical communication.
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote, project-based environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Python scripting or CAD automation experience; valuable but not mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed parametric CAD models in FreeCAD and modify existing models to meet changing technical requirements.
  • Apply robust modelling practices that preserve design intent and editability, maintain geometric accuracy, and validate models against project specifications.
  • Develop and optimise mechanical assemblies, define component relationships, interfaces, and constraints, and evaluate fit, function, consistency, robustness, and maintainability.
  • Apply GD&T and Design for Manufacturing principles, assess production readiness, and identify design choices that may cause manufacturing or inspection challenges.
  • Generate precise technical drawings and supporting engineering documentation that communicate dimensions, tolerances, assembly requirements, and design intent.
  • Document modelling assumptions and engineering decisions, and maintain consistent documentation standards.
  • Conduct QA reviews of CAD models and drawings; verify model integrity and specification compliance; identify errors, inconsistencies, incomplete constraints, and documentation gaps; and communicate issues for resolution.
  • Use Python scripting where appropriate to automate CAD workflows, streamline repetitive or complex modelling operations, and support reproducible, scalable CAD processes.
