About The Position

This is a fully remote, independent contractor consulting opportunity for an experienced Manufacturing Design Engineer contributing to an advanced AI training and mechanical-engineering project. The work centers on creating, modifying, documenting, and validating production-ready mechanical parts and assemblies using FreeCAD or a comparable parametric CAD platform. No prior AI experience is required. The work combines parametric 3D modelling, mechanical and assembly design, engineering drawings and GD&T, design for manufacturing, CAD validation, quality assurance, technical documentation, and support for AI training workflows. Assignments may include part modelling, assembly development, drawing creation, manufacturability analysis, and documentation. Project scope, workload, modelling complexity, and quality standards may change with project requirements. Work must not use confidential or proprietary information belonging to any employer, client, institution, or other third party. The opportunity is available through 24-MAG LLC, which connects professionals with remote consulting opportunities. Compensation is $40–$100 per hour.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience designing mechanical components for manufacturing environments.
  • Strong expertise in FreeCAD or comparable parametric CAD platforms.
  • Experience with advanced 3D modelling, assemblies, and engineering drawing generation.
  • Practical exposure to sheet metal, CNC machining, plastics, and injection moulding.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis.
  • Solid understanding of Design for Manufacturing principles.
  • Ability to create production-grade CAD models and validate them against real-world manufacturability requirements.
  • Strong mechanical-design and spatial-reasoning skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal technical communication.
  • Strong attention to detail and engineering quality.

Responsibilities

  • Create detailed parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical components.
  • Develop and modify assemblies using FreeCAD or comparable parametric CAD software.
  • Apply robust constraints, feature structures, and design intent; maintain model stability and editability as requirements evolve.
  • Translate written and technical requirements into accurate, production-oriented geometry.
  • Design mechanical parts and assemblies for manufacturing environments, defining interfaces, fits, constraints, and assembly relationships.
  • Evaluate component interactions across larger mechanical systems and apply practical mechanical-design judgment.
  • Incorporate reviewer feedback into revised CAD designs.
  • Produce manufacturing-ready engineering drawings and apply GD&T and dimensional controls appropriately.
  • Develop tolerance stack-ups where required and ensure drawings accurately reflect model geometry and design intent.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing principles for processes including sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, plastics, and injection moulding.
  • Identify manufacturing complexity, assess manufacturability constraints, and refine designs to improve production feasibility while preserving function.
  • Review CAD models for accuracy and completeness; validate geometry against dimensional and manufacturing requirements.
  • Identify modelling errors, inconsistencies, and missing design information, and confirm models are suitable for downstream production or engineering use.
  • Maintain consistent quality standards across modelling assignments.
  • Prepare technical documentation and assembly instructions; explain modelling choices, assumptions, and design rationale.
  • Create reference materials for AI training workflows and document revisions and validation findings.
  • Communicate technical feedback effectively in written and verbal formats.
