About The Position

This Individual Contributor role is primarily responsible for leading identification and resolution efforts as they pertain to Utility product field issues. It requires a broad understanding of the Utility product, how it is manufactured, including inspection requirements for each product feature, and a basic understanding of how the product is to be installed and function. Additionally, this position requires proficiency in three areas of NDT: Visual (VT), Magnetic Particle (MT), and Ultrasonic (UT). This position will routinely interact with the customer, working directly with the customer’s representatives, including third-party services who represent the customer (e.g., inspection services, construction management, engineering services, etc.). As such, this position will be required to demonstrate professionalism at all times and the ability to work in environments that, at times, may be somewhat adversarial. To assess and resolve field problems, this position will also work directly with multiple departments within the Valmont Utility group, such as manufacturing sites, customer service managers, project managers, project administrators, account managers, etc. As with many of the roles within the QA (Quality Assurance) organization, this position may be called upon to support other events, such as internal product and process audits, customer pre-production manufacturing evaluations, technical sales assistance, etc.

Requirements

  • Preferred bachelor’s degree with 5+ years relevant experience or associate’s degree with 7+ years of experience or 9+ years of relevant quality experience
  • Five years of experience in metals fabrication, including welding, and two years’ experience working in a Quality Control and/or Quality Assurance capacity
  • SNT-TC-1A (American Society of Nondestructive Testing recommended practice number) VT Level 2, MT Level 2, and UT Level 2
  • AWS-CWI (American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector)
  • NACE CIP (National Association of Corrosion Engineers Coating Inspection Program) Level 1
  • Ability to interpret standard U.S. and metric measurements
  • Ability to understand and use industry-standard mathematical equations and formulas
  • Ability to write legible reports and summarize findings
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical data
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints
  • Finished coating specification knowledge
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability
  • Thoughtful communicator; measured in interactions with customers, third-party representatives, co-workers, and other Valmont contacts
  • Ability to perform manual labor while in the field, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working in an environment where there is exposure to weather elements
  • Ability to travel up to 80% domestically – some international travel possible
  • Strong computer skills using MS Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and CRS to generate reports and spreadsheets
  • Ability to learn and use the IFS Call Center System
  • Ability to book travel and manage expenses

Nice To Haves

  • Five years of experience working in a Quality Control and/or Quality Assurance group as an inspector

  • NACE CIP Level 2

Responsibilities

  • This position reports to the Manager of Field Quality Assurance and has no direct reports or indirect reports
  • This role requires up to 80% travel (internationally/domestically), including overnight stays
  • Field problem identification and resolution
  • Managing third-party contractors and/or other Valmont technical support (e.g., welder)
  • Performing VT, MT, and UT as needed
  • Auditing of products and processes in the field and in the manufacturing process
  • Auditing of products delivered to customer sites for conformance to specifications
  • Routinely monitor compliance with customer specifications and Utility work instructions and specifications
  • Conduct business on behalf of the Company in full compliance with the laws of the many jurisdictions in which we operate
  • Maintain a safe and healthy workplace; Report all accidents and injuries, unsafe equipment, practices, or conditions to management. Report any instance of violent or threatening behavior
  • Come to work free from the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol, and make management or Human Resources aware if unable to work or operate equipment safely
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, although the most frequent lift is up to 20 pounds
  • Ability to determine whether or not a perceived quality issue is a result of the Utility product and/or service, a customer issue, or a combination of the two
  • Reports findings to QA management with a recommendation to remedy
  • Oversee the remedy, including performing final inspection if necessary
  • Assist with pre-production visits by the customer and/or their designate
  • Provide assurance to the customer that the quality system is in place to ensure their product will be produced correctly
  • Provide on-site support to long-term field projects
  • Participate in internal product and process audits as time permits
  • Assess and determine how the customer issue/concern should be classified, warranty work, i.e., warranty work or other
  • Report back to the commercial team – coordinate orders, etc. as needed
  • Perform simple repairs independently
  • Ability to accurately document and describe the issue – write field reports
  • General knowledge of manufacturing specifications
  • May be assigned to long-term field support projects
  • Ability to interact professionally with clients and co-workers
