About the position
Skydio is seeking a world-class engineering leader to manage and grow a team of autonomy engineers who specialize in state estimation and obstacle avoidance systems. As the leader of the core vision team, you will be responsible for improving the robustness and capabilities of these technologies, investing in new approaches to support hardware solutions and provide trustworthy autonomy in challenging conditions. This role offers the opportunity to leverage robotics and computer vision experience to bring state-of-the-art autonomy technology to market, collaborate with cross-functional teams, hire and mentor engineers, and uphold engineering standards. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in software engineering, robotics, and computer vision, along with proven leadership and communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Manage and grow a team of experienced autonomy engineers
- Analyze and improve core state estimation and obstacle avoidance systems
- Lead the core vision team and own the vision-based state estimation and obstacle avoidance systems
- Improve the robustness and capabilities of core vision
- Invest in new state-of-the-art approaches to support new hardware solutions
- Provide trustworthy autonomy in challenging conditions
- Collaborate with autonomy, product management, embedded, mobile, cloud, hardware, and flight test teams
- Hire and mentor engineers working on the core vision system
- Uphold and improve engineering standards
- Drive infrastructure investments
- Apply research and develop state-of-the-art approaches to core vision problems
- Integrate approaches into shipping product
- Blend geometric and deep learning approaches to solve real-world problems
- Have a deep understanding of robotics, computer vision, and software systems
- Demonstrate leadership, management, recruiting, team building, and communication skills
- Possess solid fundamentals in 3D geometry, mathematics, and linear algebra
- Enjoy building flying robots and making an impact in the field.
Requirements
- Hands-on technical leader with strong software engineering experience in robotics and/or computer vision
- Deep understanding of topics in robotics, computer vision, and software systems
- Proven leadership, management, recruiting, team building, and communication skills
- Solid fundamentals in 3D geometry, mathematics, and linear algebra
- Ability to leverage robotics and computer vision experience to bring state-of-the-art autonomy technology to market
- Ability to execute complex cross-team goals and collaborate effectively with various teams
- Experience in hiring and mentoring world-class engineers
- Ability to uphold and improve engineering standards and drive infrastructure investments
- Ability to apply research and develop state-of-the-art approaches to core vision problems
- Proficiency in blending geometric and deep learning approaches to solve real-world problems
- Passion for building flying robots and making an impact in the drone industry.
