Senior Engineer, Platform Services

Stord•Remote - NC, NC

About The Position

Stord is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer for its Platform Services team. This role is crucial for building the systems that determine the speed and efficiency of all other Stord engineers. Unlike customer-facing roles, this position focuses on internal customers, with metrics tied to organizational output and leverage. The engineer will operate with a high degree of autonomy, identifying needs, making decisions, and owning outcomes, working closely with the Principal Engineering Group for architectural direction. The ideal candidate is smart, adaptable, comfortable with ambiguity, and thrives on solving hard problems with the freedom to innovate. Stord values strong engineering fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and an ownership mentality over specific technology checklists. This role offers a unique opportunity to tackle a genuinely hard, unsolved problem in agentic development, provide real leverage across the engineering organization, and define a critical function at a pivotal moment in the company's growth.

Requirements

  • Platform depth: Meaningful experience at the infrastructure or platform layer with strong opinions on maintainability, agent failure modes, and developer platform adoption.
  • Agentic development in practice: Experience running agents in production-adjacent workflows, understanding technical infrastructure changes needed for improvement, and having a CLAUDE.md or equivalent in at least one repo.
  • Product manager instincts: Ability to define problems before solutions, ship, measure, and iterate; clear communication with non-technical stakeholders.
  • High agency: Thrives without a detailed brief; comfortable with evolving work and ambiguity.
  • CLI-native workflow: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or equivalent as the primary development environment.
  • Ownership & Accountability: Owns features end-to-end, follows through from design to production.
  • Strong Communication: Ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs to engineers, PMs, and stakeholders; asks good questions and listens well.
  • Collaborative Approach: Works well with others, gives constructive code review feedback, and actively seeks input.
  • Production Mindset: Prioritizes reliability and user impact; considers failure modes, monitoring, and operational concerns.
  • Learning Agility: Comfortable with rapidly evolving AI/ML technologies and tools; stays current without chasing hype.
  • Directed AI-Assisted Development: Knows how to use AI coding tools as a productivity multiplier while maintaining quality and technical judgment.

Nice To Haves

  • Domain context in logistics, supply chain, or operations software.
  • Familiarity with Stord's stack: Elixir/Phoenix, TypeScript, Kafka, GCP.
  • Experience building or significantly contributing to an internal developer platform.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools (Temporal, Prefect, Airflow, or similar).
  • Open source contributions or active participation in agentic developer communities (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.).
  • Experience with authentication/authorization systems (OAuth, OIDC, RBAC/ABAC patterns).
  • Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging systems at scale.
  • Familiarity with GCP services or Terraform.
  • Experience in logistics, supply chain, or commerce domains.
  • History of working in high-growth environments with rapid organizational scaling.
  • Experience with M&A integration—consolidating acquired systems into a unified platform.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the technical strategy for unifying Stord's product suite into a composable set of shared services.
  • Identify where common capabilities are duplicated across product-specific implementations and drive their extraction into well-defined platform services.
  • Ensure platform services support multi-product integration cleanly, with particular attention to consolidation challenges from acquired products.
  • Be the go-to technical resource for product teams integrating with platform services.
  • Proactively identify friction in how teams consume shared infrastructure.
  • Close the feedback loop between platform decisions and product team outcomes.
  • Collaborate with SRE on infrastructure concerns that affect shared service reliability.
  • Build MCP integrations, shared skill libraries, and automated feedback loops (type systems, test harnesses, linters, pre-commit hooks) to enable agents to do reliable work autonomously.
  • Understand internal engineers' friction deeply through direct conversation and ship tooling, golden paths, and scaffolding with rigor and iteration speed.
  • Evaluate tools, design patterns for embedding them into everyday engineering practice, and push the ceiling of what is possible with agents in a well-instrumented environment.
  • Know where agents fail and build the infrastructure changes that make them succeed.

Benefits

  • Meaningful equity
  • Organizational support and visibility for AI investment
