Senior Engineer, Data & Perception

Senra Systems•Cypress, CA
•$180,000 - $230,000•Onsite

About The Position

Senra Systems is hiring a hands-on senior engineer to own the technical implementation of the data and perception layer for its Automation Program. The role covers cameras, sensors, capture systems, pipelines, and models that convert activity on production lines into data for factory software, industrial engineers, and robots. The work supports automation of high-mix electrical wire harness manufacturing and is performed with real hardware in active production environments. The engineer will build and operate production data infrastructure and perception systems, including line instrumentation, video and sensor data pipelines, computer vision, automated measurement, and data infrastructure for robot learning. The role also includes governance and security for technician, export-controlled, and customer data; setting engineering standards; evaluating vendors and platforms; and helping hire and mentor future team members. This is a senior, high-ownership role on a small team with aggressive goals. The position reports to Senra's Head of AI & Robotics, a cofounder, and works closely with other senior engineers. It is onsite at the Cypress, California facility, with regular time at the Redondo Beach, California facility. Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors, with a stated salary range of $180,000–$230,000.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience building data infrastructure or perception systems that run in production, including experience serving as technical lead.
  • Experience training, deploying, and monitoring computer vision models on camera data from manufacturing, robotics, logistics, or similar physical-world settings.
  • Experience engineering for large volumes of video and sensor data, including capture, pipelines, storage, labeling, and tooling for training and evaluation.
  • Experience working with cameras and sensors on real hardware, including selection, calibration, synchronization, and edge compute.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills and experience with a deep learning framework such as PyTorch.
  • Comfort deploying to cloud and edge environments; C++ experience where performance requires it.
  • Track record of rapid prototyping, testing on real hardware, and iterating toward reliable results.
  • Self-starter who takes end-to-end ownership of a technical area, partners effectively with senior engineers, and communicates clearly with technicians, engineers, and leadership.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical or computer engineering, robotics, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Person as defined under ITAR, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with robot-learning data infrastructure, including teleoperation or demonstration capture, dataset management, and evaluation.
  • Experience with activity or step recognition from video, or automated time study.
  • Experience integrating with manufacturing systems such as MES or ERP, or with factory software.
  • Experience working with export-controlled or regulated data such as ITAR, CUI, or CMMC.
  • Experience in wire harness, cable assembly, or other high-mix assembly.
  • Startup or high-growth company experience.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or helping build a team.

Responsibilities

  • Instrument production lines with cameras and sensors at workstations and in cells, and build capture software and edge hardware that operate reliably on the factory floor.
  • Build pipelines and storage for video, sensor, and robot data, linking that data to jobs, operations, and parts in the in-house factory software.
  • Develop and deploy production computer vision for inspection, step and activity recognition, part and wire detection, and cell sensing.
  • Generate automated measurements, including time studies, step logs, and photo records, to inform planning, pricing, and quality.
  • Build demonstration capture, labeling, datasets, and evaluation infrastructure for robot learning in collaboration with the Senior Robotics Engineer, Robot Learning.
  • Manage data governance and security, including technician consent, access control, and handling export-controlled and customer data.
  • Establish engineering standards and evaluate vendors and platforms where purchasing is preferable to building.
  • Help hire and mentor engineers as the team grows.
  • Partner with the Head of AI & Robotics and other senior engineers to execute and shape the technical roadmap.
