Senior Engineer, Core Infrastructure

Oracle•Nashville, TN
•$79,200 - $209,500

About The Position

Within Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), the Technical Strategy & Oversight organization builds foundational systems for demanding services. Autonomous OCI is a greenfield initiative to develop a cloud platform that operates and scales with less manual work. It aims to make services fast, resilient, and self-healing by default, enabling OCI to scale to thousands of regions without proportionally expanding operations teams. As a Senior Member of Technical Staff, you will help build Lightweight Infrastructure (LWI), a next-generation runtime and platform layer for compute, storage, networking, identity, observability, and governance. The role designs, implements, tests, and optimizes distributed-system components with a focus on scalability, resiliency, reliability, security, and operability. It also involves operational support, incident response, automation, and collaboration across teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3–5+ years of software engineering experience building reliable services, infrastructure, or distributed systems.
  • Strong programming skills in at least one systems or backend language, such as Java, Go, Rust, C/C++, or Python.
  • Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, operating systems, networking, concurrency, and distributed-systems fundamentals.
  • Ability to design, build, test, and debug reliable software in a large, evolving codebase.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with an ownership-oriented mindset.

Nice To Haves

  • Rust experience is a strong plus for compute and systems-oriented roles.
  • Experience or strong interest in cloud infrastructure, virtualization, Linux systems, containers, storage, networking, security, schedulers, control planes, or management planes.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and contribute to distributed-system components that support horizontal and vertical scaling, including use of distributed state management tools.
  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and use data-plane platform components for large-scale retrieval, storage, and processing.
  • Implement scalability requirements, review team members’ implementations, and conduct performance and load testing.
  • Collaborate on fault-tolerant components that support in-service updates through redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Apply recovery-oriented principles and implement retries, circuit breakers, and timeouts to handle disruptions and network unreliability.
  • Implement tests and alarms to detect and address issues, and build dashboards, telemetry, and alerting to monitor component health.
  • Draft and execute runbooks and operational procedures to support recovery from failures.
  • Design and implement feature requirements and tests, including fault-injection and brown-out scenarios, and use data replication and synchronization to maintain integrity and availability.
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve system-component issues and implement strategies to prevent customer-facing maintenance windows.
  • Develop automation scripts and tooling for troubleshooting and operational support; participate in support rotations, incident response, and root-cause investigations.
  • Apply security controls, including encryption and access controls, implement remediation plans, and help ensure compliance with industry standards and current documentation.
  • Maintain automation tools such as Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and follow change-management plans for patching, updates, and rollbacks.
  • Track timelines and deliver work in alignment with project requirements; reprioritize as resources or timelines change.
  • Collaborate across teams, understand stakeholder and customer needs, and contribute to shared objectives.
  • Identify and troubleshoot standard and non-standard issues, escalate complex issues appropriately, and share knowledge and best practices.
  • Pursue continuous learning, use feedback and training to improve skills, and contribute to knowledge sharing.
  • Recommend improvements to team processes, protocols, and workflows, incorporating input from team members.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, including expert medical opinion.
  • Short-term and long-term disability insurance.
  • Life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage.
  • Supplemental life insurance for employees, spouses, and children.
  • Health care and dependent care flexible spending accounts.
  • Pre-tax commuter and parking benefits.
  • 401(k) Savings and Investment Plan with company match.
  • Flexible or accrued vacation, depending on employee eligibility and position type.
  • 11 paid holidays.
  • Paid sick leave.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Adoption assistance.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Financial planning and group legal benefits.
  • Voluntary auto, homeowner, and pet insurance.
  • The role may be eligible for bonus and equity.
