About The Position

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (IC3) for its Database and Host Automation team. The team builds services and host agents to manage database infrastructure at scale, including provisioning, lifecycle management, live database migrations, maintenance, recovery, and region bootstrap. This is a greenfield opportunity to design and build automation services and secure host execution capabilities, connecting fleet-wide orchestration with reliable database and operating-system operations on individual hosts while improving availability, consistency, operational safety, and customer experience. The engineer will drive complex projects from architecture through production operation in collaboration with database, infrastructure, and security teams. The role includes technical leadership through design guidance, robust software delivery, mentoring, and improvements to engineering and operational practices. As a member of Cloud Services Development, the engineer owns software design and development for major Oracle Cloud Infrastructure components. The team specializes in distributed database systems and cloud services and serves as the centralized database store for Oracle Public Cloud. The position involves designing, developing, troubleshooting, and debugging software for databases, applications, tools, and networks. It includes implementing scalable, reliable, and correct distributed-system components; operational troubleshooting and incident response; security and compliance work; and maintaining infrastructure automation and change-management processes.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience delivering and operating large-scale, highly available distributed systems and/or cloud services.
  • Strong knowledge of Java and scripting languages such as Python or Perl.
  • Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, operating systems, distributed systems, and cloud-services fundamentals.
  • Working familiarity with networking protocols such as TCP/IP and HTTP and with standard network architectures.
  • Strong understanding of databases, NoSQL systems, storage, and distributed persistence technologies, especially in cloud environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong knowledge of Terraform and/or Ansible.

Responsibilities

  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and implement scalability requirements for assigned components; review team members' implementations.
  • Use data-plane platform components for large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing, and implement performance and load testing.
  • Collaborate on fault-tolerant components that withstand in-service updates using redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Apply recovery-oriented computing principles and implement retries, circuit breakers, and timeouts to handle service disruptions and network unreliability.
  • Implement tests and alarm configurations to detect and address issues; support recovery from failures by drafting and executing runbooks and operational procedures.
  • Build and customize dashboards, telemetry, and alerting mechanisms to monitor component health.
  • Design and implement feature requirements and tests, including fault-injection and brown-out scenarios, and use replication and synchronization techniques to maintain data integrity and availability.
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve issues in system components; develop strategies and automation tools to troubleshoot operational issues and prevent customer-impacting interruptions.
  • Participate in operational support rotations, incident response, and root-cause investigations.
  • Apply security measures, including encryption and access controls, remediate security issues, and collaborate to maintain compliance with applicable standards and regulations and keep documentation current.
  • Maintain automation scripts and tools, including infrastructure-as-code tools, for cloud infrastructure management.
  • Follow change-management plans for application patching, updates, and rollbacks.
  • Track project timelines with minimal supervision, complete work in alignment with requirements, and adjust priorities as resources or timelines change.
  • Collaborate across teams, align expectations, understand stakeholder and customer needs, and build effective partnerships.
  • Identify and address standard and non-standard issues, analyze information from multiple sources, escalate complex issues as appropriate, and contribute to knowledge sharing.
