About The Position

Ultra ProLogic is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to architect, implement, and certify high-assurance cryptographic systems used by the U.S. Department of Defense, NATO, and allied partners. The role focuses on security-critical software and firmware that must meet NSA High Assurance certification requirements, contributing to cryptographic information assurance architectures, certification artifacts, and fielded systems that protect tactical and strategic networks. The engineer will develop embedded software primarily in C and Rust for cryptographic and security-critical platforms, including systems for secure communications, remote rekey, and lifecycle management. The position includes modernizing legacy C software and designing Rust-based embedded solutions for constrained, security- and safety-critical environments. Work spans architecture, requirements and documentation, testing, certification, configuration control, and sustainment in collaboration with systems, hardware, security, and test engineers. Periodic travel of approximately 5% is required.

Requirements

  • Active U.S. Government Secret Security Clearance; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of embedded software development experience in C and/or Rust.
  • Experience with low-level embedded development and debugging.
  • Experience with ARM-based processors and SoC platforms.
  • Experience with firmware and hardware/software integration.
  • Strong understanding of memory management, concurrency, and deterministic embedded behavior.

Nice To Haves

  • 8 or more years of embedded or firmware development experience.
  • Experience with Rust in constrained embedded environments, including no-std, heapless, or hardware abstraction layers (HAL).
  • Direct experience with NSA High Assurance certification, RMF, or similar DoD security frameworks.
  • Familiarity with cryptographic system design, key management, and secure boot/trust architectures.
  • Experience with openOCD, gdb, and JTAG/SWD debugging.
  • Experience with AMD Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC, such as the Xilinx ZCU102/104 Evaluation Kit or similar.
  • Experience working on projects using waterfall or agile development methodologies.
  • Strong systems-thinking skills and ability to assess technical risk and security impact.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in technically rigorous teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software primarily in C and Rust for cryptographic and security-critical platforms.
  • Architect cryptographic information assurance software and systems, defining security boundaries, trusted services, and separation of crypto and non-crypto functions.
  • Perform trade studies and embedded architecture design, emphasizing memory-safe designs and C-to-Rust transitions.
  • Support NSA High Assurance certification, including requirements decomposition and traceability, security architecture definition and documentation, certification artifacts and evidence, technical reviews, and certification milestones.
  • Develop and maintain formal engineering documentation, including Software & Hardware Requirements (SHRS, IRS), Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and Software/Hardware Design Descriptions (SHDD).
  • Develop and execute unit, integration, and acceptance testing, including hardware-in-the-loop and security-relevant test cases.
  • Manage configuration control for software development items in certified baselines.
  • Collaborate with systems, hardware, security, and test engineers.
  • Identify and implement process, tooling, and automation improvements for secure development and certification efficiency.
  • Travel periodically, approximately 5%, for customer interaction, test events, or off-site integration activities.

Benefits

  • Annual performance-related bonus.
  • Competitive paid time off package plus 11 company holidays.
  • Early finish on Friday.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Student loan assistance program.
