About The Position

Heath Consultants is seeking an experienced Senior Embedded Engineer for its Product Engineering team. This hands-on role supports the design, development, testing, and ongoing support of embedded electronic instrumentation and systems for the natural gas utility industry. The engineer will work across electronics, embedded firmware, instrumentation, sensing, and systems engineering, contributing through the complete product lifecycle—from concept and prototypes through testing, manufacturing, release, and product improvement. The role involves developing embedded and real-time systems; applying electrical engineering principles to analog, digital, power, and firmware systems; designing low-power electronics for portable instruments; and contributing to electronics architecture, schematics, PCB layout, board bring-up, design reviews, and product release. The engineer will also guide PCB designers, troubleshoot system problems, simulate power converters and control systems, and make design tradeoffs involving cost, performance, reliability, manufacturability, and schedule. The successful candidate will translate customer and field needs into requirements and technical solutions, support verification and validation and manufacturing transfer, and identify new components and technologies that may improve products. They will collaborate with firmware, software, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, repair, and product management; serve as a technical resource; communicate engineering information; and coach less-experienced engineers and technicians. The role also requires consideration of applicable standards and safety, environmental, wireless, and international compliance requirements. The position is based in Heath Consultants’ Houston, Texas office near Hobby Airport. Candidates must be available to work and interview in that office. Work typically takes place in an office, engineering lab, or manufacturing environment, with occasional customer-site work outdoors around gas and utility infrastructure. Travel throughout the United States may be required up to 20% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 4–7 years of experience in a research and development, manufacturing, or engineering environment; portable-instrument experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in embedded electronics, instrumentation, sensing, or related product development.
  • Proficiency with electrical CAD tools such as Altium.
  • Proficiency in developing embedded firmware.
  • Proficiency in developing software tools.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to create clear, professional technical documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, product management, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Must be available to work and interview in the Houston, Texas office.
  • Ability to travel throughout the United States up to 20% of the time.
  • Ability to work in office, laboratory, manufacturing, and occasional outdoor environments.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with microcontroller-based hardware and firmware development, including AVR, ARM, Renesas, or NXP.
  • Real-Time Operating System (RTOS)-based product development experience.
  • FPGA or RTL coding, particularly for timing control, sensor interfaces, or signal processing.
  • Intrinsic Safety design experience.
  • Experience with optical sensors, transducers, infrared (IR), or similar sensing technologies.
  • Hands-on use of laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Experience with product development phases including hardware requirements definition, R&D design outputs, verification and validation test plans and protocols, manufacturing design transfer, and production support.
  • Experience with portable instrumentation or gas-sensing technologies.
  • Awareness of new component developments and emerging technologies relevant to gas sensing, and ability to recommend them for designs to achieve cost, performance, and size goals.
  • Experience coaching or mentoring engineers and/or technicians during product development and in production.

Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded and real-time systems using C, C++, Python, and/or MATLAB.
  • Apply electrical engineering principles across analog, digital, power, and embedded firmware systems.
  • Design and support low-power electronics for portable, handheld instruments, including wired and wireless connectivity.
  • Lead or contribute to electronics architecture and design, including schematics, PCB layouts, board bring-up, design reviews, and product release support.
  • Perform PCB designs and edits and guide PCB designers by defining layout requirements and constraints, including board stack-up, component placement, grounding, power routing, high-speed routing, and design for manufacturing.
  • Develop and troubleshoot embedded firmware and real-time systems.
  • Use engineering development tools and processes such as GitHub, Jira, and Visual Studio.
  • Implement power converter and control system simulations using tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, and PSpice.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, firmware, and system-level problems using a structured root-cause approach.
  • Evaluate design tradeoffs involving cost, performance, reliability, manufacturability, and schedule.
  • Translate customer and field needs into engineering requirements and practical technical solutions.
  • Evaluate prototypes and designs and recommend improvements.
  • Support hardware requirements definition, R&D design, verification and validation, test planning and execution, manufacturing design transfer, product release, and sustaining engineering.
  • Identify new components and emerging technologies that may improve product cost, performance, size, reliability, or capability.
  • Serve as a technical resource and contribute to architecture and design decisions.
  • Communicate technical information clearly with engineering and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Work with outside suppliers and manufacturers on system- and project-level activities.
  • Coach and mentor less-experienced engineers and technicians throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Apply applicable standards, regulations, and engineering guidance for products developed and manufactured for the natural gas utility market.
  • Consider relevant safety, environmental, wireless, and international compliance requirements throughout product development.
  • Travel throughout the United States up to 20% of the time.
