Senior Electrochemist / Senior Electrochemical Engineer

Oxylus Energy•Branford, CT
•$115,000 - $135,000•Onsite

About The Position

Oxylus Energy is a climate-tech company developing electrochemical technology that converts carbon dioxide into carbon-neutral fuels and chemicals. The Senior Electrochemist / Senior Electrochemical Engineer tests membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) for CO₂ electrolyzers under a range of operating conditions, builds understanding of the scientific and operating principles governing reactor performance, and designs and runs experiments to improve that performance. The role involves setting up and managing electrochemical tests, ensuring they produce high-quality data, analyzing results, and reporting findings to project stakeholders. The engineer also contributes to experimental design, investigates failure mechanisms, maintains test equipment, mentors junior researchers, documents procedures, and prepares analyses and presentations for the wider technical team. The position is onsite in Branford, Connecticut. The hire must be willing to relocate to the Bridgeport/Stamford area within one year of the start date.

Requirements

  • Academic background in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, or materials science and engineering, with one of the following: B.S./B.A. or equivalent and 6+ years of relevant experience; M.S./M.A. or equivalent and 4+ years of relevant experience; or a Ph.D. or equivalent with relevant experience working on electrolyzers, fuel cells, or batteries.
  • Extensive hands-on experience testing electrochemical devices such as electrolyzers, fuel cells, flow batteries, or batteries, ideally in MEA or zero-gap cell formats.
  • Hands-on experience with chronopotentiometry, EIS, accelerated stress testing, polarization curves, and/or linear, cyclic, or square-wave voltammetry tests.
  • Strong command of electrochemical fundamentals, including reaction kinetics and mass transport processes.
  • Hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting test stations, including potentiostats or power supplies, mass flow controllers, humidification systems, and pressure control.
  • Experience designing experimental plans, including design-of-experiments (DOE) studies, and drawing sound conclusions from complex or imperfect data.
  • Track record of independently leading research or development projects from concept to results, demonstrated, for example, through publications, patents, or delivered products.
  • Experience writing standard test protocols and training others to follow them.
  • Strong commitment to lab safety, including when working with pressurized systems and hazardous gases such as CO.
  • Highly attentive to detail, with strong organizational skills.
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Able to lift up to 20 lb while assembling larger-format cells.
  • Must be willing to relocate to the Bridgeport/Stamford area within one year of the start date.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electrochemical tests and analyze and summarize results, including chronopotentiometry, EIS, accelerated stress testing, and cyclic voltammetry.
  • Investigate failure mechanisms in CO₂ reduction systems.
  • Manage, troubleshoot, and maintain electrochemical test stations.
  • Use experimental data to guide future experimental plans.
  • Communicate test-hardware status and issues that arise during experiments.
  • Mentor junior members of the research team.
  • Document procedures to build shared knowledge across the team.
  • Prepare presentations and data analyses for the wider technical team.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Paid sick days and vacation
  • 401k match
  • A diverse and inclusive work environment
