Electrochemical Engineer II/III

Solid Power•Thornton, CO
•$80,000 - $125,000•Onsite

About The Position

Solid Power is seeking an Electrochemical Engineer to join its Electrolyte Systems Engineering team and help develop next-generation all-solid-state rechargeable batteries. This role focuses on characterizing the electrochemical performance of current and future generations of electrolyte materials. The engineer will execute and improve electrochemical testing methods, analyze data, and turn results into engineering insights that support product development, process optimization, and scale-up from pre-pilot through pilot manufacturing. The position involves designing, conducting, and interpreting experiments; connecting electrolyte processing conditions, material properties, and microstructure to electrochemical performance; and supporting improved understanding of electrolyte behavior, degradation, and electrochemical stability. The engineer will also contribute to root-cause investigations and communicate findings and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders. The role requires a relevant technical degree and at least three years of experience developing or applying electrochemical characterization methods. The position level will be determined based on experience. The job posting identifies the role as onsite through its #LI-Onsite tag. Required PPE may include eye protection, a hair net, gloves, a face mask, coveralls, and a full-face respirator or PAPR, as necessary.

Requirements

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrochemistry, Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical field.
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience developing or applying electrochemical characterization methods in batteries, solid-state batteries, electrochemical materials, or related technologies.
  • Working knowledge of EIS, CV, galvanostatic cycling, CCD testing, DC polarization, and interpretation of electrochemical datasets.
  • Strong understanding of structure-property-performance relationships in electrochemical systems and ability to connect material behavior to product performance.
  • Experience designing statistically sound experimental plans (DOE), analyzing large datasets, and drawing actionable conclusions.
  • Proficiency with data analysis and statistical software such as JMP, Minitab, Python, MATLAB, Origin, or similar.
  • Experience with root-cause analysis, troubleshooting, and cross-functional technical problem solving.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex technical findings to engineers, scientists, management, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to independently execute technical workstreams and contribute to cross-functional projects in a fast-paced development environment.
  • Ability to wear required PPE as necessary, including eye protection, hair net, gloves, face mask, coveralls, full-face respirator, or PAPR.
  • Employment is contingent on clear results of a thorough background check.
  • Continued employment is conditioned on the availability of any required government authorization for access to export-controlled technology, software, or information.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with DRT or other advanced electrochemical analysis methods.

Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and interpret electrochemical experiments to evaluate solid-state electrolyte product performance and stability.
  • Translate electrochemical feedback into actionable product and process improvements.
  • Correlate electrolyte processing conditions, material properties, and microstructure with electrochemical performance to support process-structure-property-performance understanding and decision-making.
  • Perform electrochemical characterization, including EIS, CV, CCD testing, DC polarization, rate capability testing, and long-term cycling studies; apply advanced methods such as DRT analysis when appropriate.
  • Develop and refine characterization methods and analytical approaches to improve understanding of electrolyte behavior, degradation mechanisms, and electrochemical stability.
  • Use statistical and data analysis tools such as JMP, Minitab, or Python to evaluate results, identify trends, and support data-driven decisions.
  • Contribute to root-cause investigations involving material performance, product variability, process changes, and customer-relevant cell outcomes.
  • Analyze, visualize, and communicate electrochemical datasets to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including clear recommendations and development priorities.
  • Support product development, process optimization, and scale-up activities from pre-pilot through pilot manufacturing.
  • Independently execute technical workstreams and contribute to cross-functional projects.
