Staff Mechanical Engineer (Electrochemical Systems)

Voya Energy•Hayward, CA
•$164,000 - $188,000•Onsite

About The Position

Voya Energy is commercializing a metal-based fuel to deliver reliable, clean, affordable electricity. The Staff Mechanical Engineer (Electrochemical Systems) role will take ownership of complex fluid systems and precision mechanisms needed to develop and scale the company’s metal-fueled generator technology. The role calls for hands-on engineering grounded in first principles, strong fluid mechanics expertise, and experience advancing hardware from concept and design through development and production. Collaboration with power electronics, automation, data, and controls teams is essential. The engineer will lead mechanical design and integration of balance-of-plant systems, including fluid handling and thermal management, and own CAD models and integration of structures, material-transfer systems, fluidic systems, power electronics, instrumentation, and safety systems. The role also covers component selection and supplier coordination; P&ID ownership; manufacturing documentation and design for manufacturability; development testing and validation; and documenting assembly and operating procedures. The position is full-time and onsite in Hayward, California.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of relevant industry experience in mechanical design and system development.
  • Experience designing and integrating balance-of-plant systems for electrochemical or similar process equipment, including fluid handling and thermal management.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, NX, or Creo, including experience with large assemblies.
  • Demonstrated experience working in PDM and/or PLM environments.
  • Strong theoretical and practical background in fluid mechanics and heat transfer.
  • Experience specifying pumps, tanks, heat exchangers, and valves.
  • Experience with development testing, failure analysis, and debugging complex systems.
  • Deep understanding of manufacturing methods and Design for Manufacturability.
  • Comfort working in an environment based on accountability, scope, schedule, budget, two-way feedback, and collaboration.
  • Familiarity with modern engineering collaboration tools such as Confluence, Slack, and Asana.
  • Demonstrated experience with FEA and/or CFD.
  • Demonstrated experience reading electrical schematics and drawings.
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced startup environment; hands-on and biased toward action.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with installation, operation, and troubleshooting of equipment is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design of precision mechanisms, material conveyance, and fluid-handling systems using commercial and custom components and Voya Energy intellectual property.
  • Own mechanical design and integration of balance-of-plant systems, including fluid handling and thermal management, for electrochemical generators.
  • Create and manage CAD models ranging from individual components to large assemblies, integrating static structures, material transfer, fluid systems, power electronics, instrumentation, and safety systems.
  • Apply fluid mechanics and heat-transfer knowledge to optimize system performance, including pump and blower selection, piping layout, heat exchanger sizing, and pressure-drop analysis; use notebooks, spreadsheets, and computational modeling as needed.
  • Select and specify critical hardware such as pumps, blowers, heat exchangers, valves, and sensors; evaluate custom versus commercially available options and work with suppliers and fabricators from initial contact through delivery.
  • Integrate, install, and troubleshoot instrumentation such as pressure transducers, flow meters, and thermocouples.
  • Create, revise, and manage configuration of subsystem and top-level P&ID documentation using industry-standard formatting.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on fabrication drawings and work instructions, applying GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and considering manufacturability, installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Develop test plans and conduct development testing to verify and validate assemblies.
  • Document assembly and operating procedures for new equipment and systems.
  • Directly support design reviews, test readiness, and test data reviews.
  • Own and drive documentation and configuration management, including in connection with development testing, failure analysis, and debugging complex systems.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity compensation commensurate with experience.
  • Unlimited PTO.
