About The Position

The Senior Electrical Application Engineer is Slingco’s senior technical authority for lineman tools and equipment, including live-line tools, temporary protective grounding, voltage detection, and related products used by utility line crews. The role applies electrical engineering expertise to product performance in field conditions, lineworker safety, and compliance with utility and industry standards. It supports product definition and new product development, resolves complex field and customer issues, and represents Slingco in technical organizations relevant to the utility market. The position provides technical support to utility customers, distributors, and Sales; leads investigations into escalated field failures; and supports product quality assessments and corrective actions. In collaboration with the Product team, it captures user requirements and drives early NPD stages, including defining electrical criteria and ratings, competitor analysis, compliance review, initial patent searches, and project budgeting. It also works with Design Engineers to ensure designs meet electrical and safety requirements and supports value engineering, reverse engineering, and product enhancements. The role leads technical registration and qualification of products against utility and industry standards, helps ensure manuals meet national and local requirements, develops training, mentors Application Engineers on electrical topics, and attends trade shows and customer meetings as needed.

Requirements

  • Electrical engineering applied to utility transmission and distribution systems.
  • Working knowledge of fault current and short-circuit current, including symmetrical RMS amps, duration, and clearing time, and how temporary protective grounding assemblies are sized to carry fault current until protective devices clear.
  • Understanding of temporary protective grounding systems, including ground clamps, cable assemblies, ferrules, and cluster bars, and their withstand and current-carrying ratings.
  • Familiarity with utility line crews’ live-line and de-energized work practices in transmission and distribution field environments.
  • Familiarity with IEEE 1048, Guide for Protective Grounding of Power Lines.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing techniques such as machining, casting, molding, and stamping, and materials such as metals, plastics, rubber, and insulating composites as applied to lineman tools and equipment.
  • Proficiency using MS Office software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical content to customers.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, and operate with minimal direction.
  • Hands-on approach to product evaluation, testing, and reverse engineering.
  • Experience in utility transmission and distribution, power systems, or electrical engineering for products used by utility line crews.
  • Applied experience with arc-flash hazard analysis, including incident energy, arc-flash boundary, and the relationship between fault current, clearing time, and worker exposure.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrated experience applying ASTM F855, Temporary Protective Grounds for use on de-energized electric power lines and equipment.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrated experience applying NFPA 70E and IEEE 1584 for workplace electrical safety and arc-flash hazard calculation.
  • Working knowledge and demonstrated experience applying OSHA 1910.269, Electric Power Generation, Transmission, and Distribution.

Nice To Haves

  • BSEE; candidates with equivalent utility electrical or power-systems experience may be considered instead of the degree.
  • Experience with utilities, lineman tool and equipment manufacturers, or utility test and standards bodies.
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Inventor or similar solid-modelling software.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the go-to technical resource on the electrical application and performance of Slingco lineman tools and equipment.
  • Lead root-cause investigations of escalated field failures and customer issues, particularly electrical failure modes such as fault-current damage, dielectric performance, and connection integrity.
  • Provide technical guidance to utility customers, distributors, and the Sales team on product selection and application.
  • Support product quality assessments and corrective actions.
  • Provide electrical engineering input to product definition and the product roadmap.
  • Work with the Product team to interface with utility end users and capture market requirements for new products.
  • Drive NPD through Stages 0 and 1, including defining electrical performance criteria and ratings, analyzing competitor products, reviewing compliance requirements, conducting the initial patent search, and preparing the initial project budget.
  • Collaborate with Design Engineers to ensure final designs meet electrical and safety requirements.
  • Support value engineering, reverse engineering, and product enhancements.
  • Lead technical work to register and qualify Slingco products against utility and industry standards.
  • Ensure operation and maintenance manuals comply with national and local requirements.
  • Participate actively in relevant technical organizations, including IEEE and ASTM.
  • Develop technical training for internal teams, distributors, and utility customers.
  • Mentor Application Engineers on electrical topics.
  • Attend trade shows and customer meetings as needed.
