Senior Developer Experience Advocate

About The Position

We're looking for a Senior Developer Experience Advocate to join the Developer Experience (DX) team at dbt Labs — a team of dbt experts on the forefront of serving dbt developers and building the next generation of data workflows. We partner across our internal product and go-to-market teams, as well as across the dbt Community, operating using the PRIME framework: Prototype, Represent, Ideate, Maintain, and Enable. This is a senior, high-impact role for a data engineering generalist who wants to spend their time in public. You will execute developer experience and developer relations work across our product surface — such as dbt State, dbt Fusion, and dbt Wizard, and the Fivetran connector SDK — helping practitioners succeed with our tools and raising our thought leadership in open data infrastructure. We are looking for someone with broad, hard-won knowledge of the data industry: how data teams actually work, where the tooling helps, and where it gets in the way. You will translate that knowledge into content, prototypes, community engagement, and product feedback. AI is reshaping parts of this landscape and you should be comfortable working with it and curious about where it goes. This is a highly autonomous role. You will set your own priorities, communicate them clearly, and deliver high-quality work without heavy direction. In exchange you get real ownership of a focus area, significant internal and external visibility, and leadership that protects your time rather than managing your calendar. We're looking for someone who can hit the ground running — shipping meaningful work within their first two weeks. This is a full-time, fully remote position based in the United States. This role reports to the Director of Community, Developer Experience & AI.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a closely related field, with strong general knowledge of the data industry and how it is changing
  • Hands-on dbt knowledge and practitioner-level fluency
  • Expert public communication in both spoken and written technical contexts, with a track record of published articles or public-facing content on data or analytics engineering — we will want to read and watch your work
  • Strong data and analytics engineering fundamentals, including comfort with Python and SQL and the ability to contribute to open source codebases
  • Comfort and familiarity with AI, and enthusiasm for adapting AI into how you work
  • Ability to work autonomously as a self-starter, delivering high-quality output with minimal direction, with the operational rigor to set priorities and communicate them clearly at multiple cadences
  • Strong product sense, the ability to translate user needs into concrete product feedback, and genuine enthusiasm for a public-facing role over internal product or engineering work

Nice To Haves

  • An existing footprint in the dbt Community, or prior hands-on use of dbt tools
  • Background in developer relations, developer experience, or developer advocacy at a developer tools company
  • Experience building with or for AI coding agents, and fluency with how the AI agent ecosystem is evolving
  • Contributions to open source projects in the data ecosystem (packages, adapters, community tools)
  • Public speaking experience at data or developer conferences, and experience with Fusion and the dbt platform

Responsibilities

  • Design and build prototypes, reference implementations, and example repositories that show practitioners how to get real work done with our tools
  • Create working prototypes that validate product direction and accelerate engineering iteration
  • Build tooling that removes friction from common analytics engineering workflows
  • Author technical content for the dbt Developer Blog, guides, and documentation that makes complex concepts actionable for practitioners
  • Publish knowledge and best practices on data and analytics engineering that establish you as a resource in your product area
  • Develop enablement resources for internal teams and the dbt Community, and contribute to product launches as a subject matter expert
  • Represent your product area as a community voice across Community Slack, GitHub, conferences, and public forums
  • Collect and synthesize community feedback, surfacing insights to product and engineering, and bring the practitioner perspective into product design reviews
  • Identify and flag sharp edges, regressions, or gaps in the developer experience
  • Maintain and triage relevant open source repositories and community projects, contributing code and design reviews with an eye toward developer ergonomics

Benefits

  • 100% employer-paid medical insurance
  • Generous paid time-off policy (PTO), plus paid sick time, inclusive parental leave policy, holidays (including a year end Global Week of Rest), and volunteer days off
  • RSU stock grants
  • Professional development and training opportunities
  • Company virtual happy hours, free food, and fun team-building activities
  • Monthly cell phone stipend
  • Access to an innovative mental health support platform that offers personalized care and resources in areas such as: therapy, coaching, and self-guided mindfulness exercises for all covered employees and their covered dependents.
