About The Position

Mercury is seeking a Design Manager to lead design for its Business Banking and Investments teams, spanning payments, accounts, and treasury. The role is accountable for the quality and impact of shipped experiences and for developing designers. The successful candidate will bring strong visual and interaction design judgment, deep hands-on craft, and the ability to challenge conventional banking workflows to create simpler, more useful products. The Design Manager will set a high bar through clear direction and thoughtful critique, review implemented experiences, and work alongside designers where their craft can advance the work. They will partner with Product and Engineering to shape product direction, make decisions amid ambiguity, and own work from identifying opportunities through launch and evaluation of customer and business outcomes. They will also manage scope and sequencing to deliver excellent work reliably, and build a healthy team by developing designers, setting clear expectations, providing useful feedback, and recognizing contributions. Mercury is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services are provided through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC. The total rewards package includes base salary, equity (stock options/RSUs), and benefits. Target new-hire base salary ranges are $228,700–$285,900 USD for US employees in any location and $216,200–$270,200 CAD for Canadian employees in any location.

Requirements

  • Ability to simplify complex product experiences, workflows, information architecture, and product constraints.
  • Experience managing designers and improving the quality of their work through coaching, feedback, and clear expectations.
  • Ability to set a product vision and help a team deliver it through practical scope and sequencing decisions, shipped work, and clear customer or business impact.
  • Comfort staying close to design work through sketching, prototyping, and detailed problem-solving alongside designers.
  • Ability to build strong partnerships with Product and Engineering, shape priorities together, and resolve competing constraints.
  • Ownership mindset: identify problems and opportunities, make decisions with incomplete information, adapt when priorities shift, and stay engaged with implementation and outcomes.
  • Ability to build conviction through clear storytelling and specific reasoning, approach disagreements with curiosity, and change direction when a better idea emerges.

  • Identify opportunities, create clarity amid ambiguity, bring stakeholders together, make decisions, and work through obstacles.
  • Stay accountable beyond handoff and launch by assessing customer and business outcomes and responding when results fall short.
  • Contribute hands-on through sketching, prototyping, and working through difficult flows where doing so can advance the work and develop designers’ judgment.
  • Make deliberate decisions about scope, sequencing, tradeoffs, and team attention to deliver excellent work on time without compromising essential details.
  • Develop designers’ taste, confidence, and delivery ability through direct feedback, clear performance expectations, and support in addressing gaps.
  • Build team alignment around a shared vision, explain why the work matters, and make designers’ contributions visible across Mercury Design.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to shape priorities, work through constraints, and build alignment around design decisions.
