Senior Design Manager - Growth

MercuryPortland, OR
$216,200 - $285,900Remote

About The Position

Growth design at Mercury requires a similar range to the Eames' work, focusing on the entire customer journey from discovery to becoming a customer, finding value, and advocacy. The Growth teams work across this journey, tackling varied design problems such as rethinking initial understanding, addressing activation friction, designing conversion experiments, and creating loops for product adoption. This role involves leading design across this portfolio, partnering with Product and Engineering to identify high-leverage opportunities, bring clarity to ambiguity, and foster a Growth design practice that balances experimentation with craft. This is a role for someone who views growth as a design problem, not solely an optimization challenge. The Senior Design Manager will lead and develop a team of designers focused on Conversion, Activation, and Virality, shaping Growth strategy, and building a scalable Growth Design practice.

Requirements

  • Experience leading and developing high-performing product or growth designers, including coaching senior designers through ambiguous, consequential work
  • A track record of using design to drive measurable business outcomes. You understand experimentation and growth mechanics, but you don’t sacrifice customer experience in pursuit of a metric
  • Excellent design thinking with strong visual and product judgment. You can evaluate the details of an experience while also seeing the larger system it belongs to
  • Comfortable moving between leadership modes: strategic thought partner, sharp critique, organizational clarity, or hands-on involvement
  • Deep care for developing people: ability to set a high bar, give direct and thoughtful feedback, recognize individual strengths, and help designers grow
  • Curiosity about human behavior, with an understanding that growth ideas often stem from customer understanding rather than just funnel analysis
  • Comfort operating independently in a fast-moving environment where answers are not always obvious

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in consumer products, commerce, or environments where design quality and business performance are deeply connected
  • A background where "Growth" was not necessarily in the title, but the skills align with driving business performance through design

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the designers working across Mercury’s Growth organization, giving them the context, coaching, and feedback they need to do exceptional work
  • Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to shape Growth strategy, identify high-leverage opportunities, and turn them into compelling customer experiences
  • Help teams move from intuition to learning by using experimentation, customer insight, and business results to inform what we build next
  • Raise the quality bar across a broad set of experiences, from Mercury’s public web presence through conversion, activation, virality, and customer experience
  • Create clarity across an inherently ambiguous problem space. You’ll help teams decide which problems matter, where design can have the greatest impact, and what excellent execution looks like
  • Build the systems and operating practices that allow Growth Design to scale without becoming mechanical. You’ll create enough structure to help teams move quickly while preserving room for judgment, creativity, and ambitious ideas
  • Grow the team thoughtfully, helping us identify what kinds of designers we need and maintaining a high bar as the organization expands
