Senior Design Manager - Growth

MercurySan Francisco, NY

About The Position

Growth design at Mercury requires a similar range to the Eames' approach to design. Our Growth teams work across the entire customer journey, from initial discovery to becoming a customer, finding value in the product, and encouraging others to join. This means the design problems are unusually varied, involving rethinking initial understanding, identifying and resolving friction in activation, designing experiments for conversion, and creating new loops to help the product reach further. We are seeking a Growth Design Manager to lead design across this portfolio, overseeing designers working on Conversion, Activation, and Virality. The role involves partnering closely with Product and Engineering to identify high-leverage opportunities, transforming ambiguity into clear direction, and fostering a Growth design practice where experimentation and exceptional craft are integrated.

Requirements

  • Experience leading and developing high-performing product or growth designers, including coaching senior designers through ambiguous, consequential work.
  • A track record of using design to drive measurable business outcomes.
  • Understanding of experimentation and growth mechanics without sacrificing customer experience for metrics.
  • Excellent design thinking with strong visual and product judgment; ability to evaluate details and see the larger system.
  • Comfortable moving between leadership modes: strategic thought partner, sharp critique, organizational clarity, and hands-on involvement.
  • Deep care for developing people: ability to set a high bar, give direct and thoughtful feedback, recognize individual strengths, and foster growth.
  • Curiosity about human behavior, understanding that the best growth ideas often stem from customer understanding.
  • Comfort operating independently in a fast-moving environment where answers are not always obvious.
  • Experience in environments where design quality and business performance are deeply connected (e.g., product design, growth design, consumer products, commerce).

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the designers working across Mercury’s Growth organization, providing context, coaching, and feedback.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to shape Growth strategy, identify high-leverage opportunities, and translate them into compelling customer experiences.
  • Help teams transition from intuition to data-driven learning by using experimentation, customer insight, and business results to inform product development.
  • Raise the quality bar across a broad set of experiences, including Mercury’s public web presence, conversion, activation, virality, and customer experience.
  • Create clarity in an ambiguous problem space, guiding teams to identify impactful problems and define excellent execution.
  • Build systems and operating practices for Growth Design that enable scaling without sacrificing creativity or judgment.
  • Grow the team thoughtfully by identifying needed designer profiles and maintaining a high hiring bar.

  • Competitive salary and equity ranges within the SaaS and fintech industry
