Senior Design Engineer, LV Devices

Harbinger Motors•Garden Grove, CA

About The Position

Harbinger is an American commercial electric vehicle company developing a platform for medium-duty electric and hybrid vehicles. The Senior Design Engineer, LV Devices owns the engineering design of complex low-voltage subsystems and components throughout their lifecycle, including body or vehicle control modules, user interface systems, and power distribution systems. The role works cross-functionally with Electrical and Software Engineering, Supply Chain, Supplier Quality, and Program Management. The engineer translates vehicle and system requirements into subsystem architectures and component requirements, defines interfaces, and develops proof-of-concept studies and prototypes. The role evaluates components and suppliers, supports sourcing decisions, and co-develops RFQs and SOWs. It leads component technical development, supplier coordination, design documentation, schedule management, and design validation. The engineer also prepares component documentation for release in the PLM system, supports PPAP and SOP, and drives continuous improvement, root-cause investigation, supplier quality support, and engineering change orders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 4 years of experience in product engineering, electrical or electromechanical design, systems engineering, or technical program management, specifically focused on automotive electromechanical control systems or wire harnesses.
  • Strong working knowledge of 3D CAD tools such as CATIA, Solidworks, NX, or similar.
  • Experience with PLM/BOM management systems such as Teamcenter, Enovia, or similar.
  • Experience writing component specifications or RFQs, comparing supplier proposals on technical merit and cost, and assessing supplier engineering, manufacturing, and quality capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of APQP and PPAP, including reviewing supplier DFMEAs and PFMEAs.
  • Solid understanding of low-voltage electrical principles and automotive communication protocols, including CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet.
  • Familiarity with major automotive connector families such as TE, Aptiv, and Molex.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical packaging concepts, enclosure design, and fastening strategies for electrical devices and wire harnesses.
  • Understanding of automotive durability factors, including vibration profiles, environmental factors, and material properties.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex supplier relationships simultaneously and hold stakeholders accountable to deadlines.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to bridge hardware, software, and non-technical teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ECAD systems such as Capital Networks or Zuken.
  • Familiarity with automotive qualification standards such as AEC-Q, USCAR-2, ISO 16750, or CISPR 25.
  • Prior experience working at an early-stage electric vehicle startup.
  • Direct experience bringing a major ECU from prototype phase into high-volume production.

Responsibilities

  • Own the engineering design of complex low-voltage subsystems and components throughout their lifecycle.
  • Use vehicle and system requirements to establish subsystem architecture and component requirements.
  • Define critical interfaces with mechanical, electrical, and software systems.
  • Perform proof-of-concept studies and create prototypes to validate initial assumptions.
  • Evaluate industry components and suppliers and determine appropriate sourcing strategies.
  • Co-develop RFQ packages and SOWs with Supply Chain colleagues.
  • Support supplier assessment and approve supplier selection.
  • Lead technical component development using in-house capabilities and supplier resources.
  • Guide suppliers through technical roadblocks to meet functional and timing requirements.
  • Document and communicate design iterations using 3D CAD, electrical specifications, and other appropriate materials.
  • Maintain accurate component schedules, identify lead-time risks early, and keep supplier deliveries on track for prototype and production builds.
  • Co-develop Design Validation Plans with suppliers and review test results to ensure product quality.
  • Collect and maintain documentation needed to release components in the PLM system.
  • Support PPAP and SOP activities for assigned components.
  • Drive continuous improvement in component cost, quality, and functionality.
  • Lead root-cause activities for plant and field issues and support supplier quality issues.
  • Initiate and manage Engineering Change Orders as needed.
