Senior Design Engineer, LV Devices

Harbinger Motors Inc.•Garden Grove, CA
•$140,000 - $180,000

About The Position

Harbinger is an American commercial electric vehicle company developing an EV platform for medium-duty vehicles and hybrids. The Senior Design Engineer owns the engineering design of complex low-voltage subsystems and components throughout their lifecycle, such as body or vehicle control modules, user interface systems, and power distribution systems. The role works cross-functionally with Electrical and Software Engineering, Supply Chain, Supplier Quality, and Program Management. The engineer uses vehicle and system requirements to define subsystem architecture, component requirements, and critical mechanical, electrical, and software interfaces. They evaluate component and supplier options, help develop RFQs and SOWs, and support supplier selection. They lead technical development and validation with suppliers, document design iterations, manage component schedules and delivery risks, and co-develop and review Design Validation Plans and test results. The role also supports production launch by maintaining release documentation in the PLM system and participating in PPAP and SOP activities. In sustaining engineering, the engineer drives improvements to cost, quality, and functionality; leads root-cause investigations for plant and field issues; supports supplier quality; and manages Engineering Change Orders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 4 years of experience in product engineering, electrical or electromechanical design, systems engineering, or technical program management, specifically focused on automotive electromechanical control systems or wire harnesses.
  • Strong working knowledge of 3D CAD tools such as CATIA, SolidWorks, NX, or similar.
  • Experience with PLM and BOM management systems such as Teamcenter, Enovia, or similar.
  • Experience writing component specifications or RFQs, comparing supplier proposals on technical merit and cost, and assessing supplier engineering, manufacturing, and quality capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of APQP and PPAP, and experience reviewing supplier DFMEAs and PFMEAs.
  • Solid understanding of low-voltage electrical principles and automotive communication protocols including CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet.
  • Familiarity with major automotive connector families such as TE, Aptiv, and Molex.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical packaging concepts, enclosure design, and fastening strategies for electrical devices and wire harnesses.
  • Understanding of automotive durability factors such as vibration profiles, environmental factors, and material properties.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex supplier relationships simultaneously and hold stakeholders accountable to deadlines.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to bridge hardware, software, and non-technical teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ECAD systems such as Capital Networks or Zuken.
  • Familiarity with automotive qualification standards such as AEC-Q, USCAR-2, ISO 16750, or CISPR 25.
  • Prior experience working at an early-stage electric vehicle startup.
  • Direct experience bringing a major ECU from prototype phase into high-volume production.

Responsibilities

  • Own the engineering design of complex low-voltage subsystems and components through their full lifecycle.
  • Use vehicle and system requirements to establish subsystem architecture and component requirements.
  • Define critical interfaces with mechanical, electrical, and software systems.
  • Perform proof-of-concept studies and create prototypes to validate initial assumptions.
  • Evaluate industry components and suppliers and help determine sourcing strategies.
  • Co-develop RFQ packages and SOWs with Supply Chain colleagues; support supplier assessments and supplier selection.
  • Lead technical development of components using in-house capabilities and supplier resources, helping suppliers resolve technical roadblocks.
  • Document and communicate design iterations through 3D CAD, electrical specifications, and related materials.
  • Maintain accurate component schedules, identify lead-time risks, and keep supplier deliveries on track for prototype and production builds.
  • Co-develop Design Validation Plans with suppliers and review test results to ensure product quality.
  • Collect and maintain documentation required to release components in the PLM system.
  • Support PPAP and SOP activities for assigned components.
  • Drive continuous improvement in component cost, quality, and functionality.
  • Lead root-cause activities for plant and field issues and support supplier quality issues.
  • Initiate and manage Engineering Change Orders as needed.
  • Manage multiple supplier relationships and hold stakeholders accountable to deadlines.
  • Communicate across hardware, software, and non-technical teams.
