About The Position

Catania Oils, a fourth-generation, family-owned business with 125 years of excellence in the edible oils industry, is looking for a passionate and driven Senior Data Base Engineer to join their team. The role involves optimizing SQL Server performance, designing and maintaining indexing strategies, developing and optimizing SQL code, building data structures for reporting, partnering with reporting developers, supporting schema design, assisting with data integration, contributing to Microsoft Fabric environment design, and acting as the primary database partner for reporting and analytics.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of progressive experience with SQL Server (or equivalent RDBMS)
  • Strong expertise in query optimization and execution plan analysis
  • Deep understanding of indexing strategies and performance tuning
  • Proven experience writing and optimizing complex stored procedures
  • Experience supporting reporting workloads and data pipelines

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting Power BI or similar reporting platforms
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL, or modern data platforms
  • Exposure to Python or data science workflows (supporting role)
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams (database, reporting, applications)
  • Experience with industrial data systems or SCADA platforms (e.g., Ignition, Iconics) in PLC-driven environments

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and optimize SQL Server performance across production systems
  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks (queries, blocking, deadlocks, IO, memory usage)
  • Proactively monitor and tune database systems
  • Implement and maintain performance monitoring solutions
  • Design, implement, and maintain effective indexing strategies
  • Analyze index usage, fragmentation, and performance impact
  • Optimize indexing for both transactional and reporting workloads
  • Design, develop, and optimize stored procedures, views, and functions
  • Refactor legacy SQL code for performance and maintainability
  • Establish and enforce SQL coding standards
  • Build and maintain optimized data structures for reporting (views, staging tables, semantic-ready models)
  • Partner with the reporting developer to ensure efficient data delivery to Power BI
  • Improve query performance impacting dashboards and reports
  • Support the evolution toward advanced analytics and data science workflows
  • Support schema design and data modeling efforts
  • Ensure data consistency, integrity, and security
  • Assist with data integration and pipeline design
  • Contribute to the design and development of the Microsoft Fabric environment
  • Support data movement, transformation, and modeling within Fabric
  • Help define best practices for hybrid SQL Server and Fabric architecture
  • Act as the primary database partner for reporting and analytics
  • Work with application teams to support backend data needs
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues related to database performance
  • Document database structures, optimization efforts, and best practices
  • Establish governance for SQL development and performance standards
