About The Position

Talan is seeking a Senior Data Engineer with strong Energy Trading expertise to support a major client in designing and delivering cloud-based data solutions. The role combines hands-on data engineering, product ownership, and stakeholder collaboration to deliver scalable solutions and improve business efficiency. The position is based in Houston and requires at least three days onsite per week.

The engineer will design, develop, and optimize cloud-based data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, and data models using Python and SQL, while ensuring data quality, performance, reliability, and integration across systems. The role also involves collaborating with Energy Trading, Assets, Operations, and IT teams to turn business needs into technical solutions, owning and prioritizing product backlogs, roadmaps, and releases, and managing stakeholder expectations.

The position contributes to data architecture, governance, and cloud platform improvements, applying Agile delivery, CI/CD, data quality, documentation, and continuous improvement practices. Talan offers sponsorship under specific treaty-based U.S. work visas, including TN and E-2, for eligible Canadian, Mexican, and French citizens; it does not support or transfer other visa types such as H-1B.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in Data Engineering, including cloud-based data pipelines and integration.
• At least 2 years of experience in Energy Trading, Energy Markets, Asset Management, or Energy Operations.
• Strong hands-on programming experience with Python and SQL.
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Strong understanding of ETL/ELT, data modeling, workflow orchestration, and API integrations.
• Experience with data quality, governance, metadata, and data lineage.
• Demonstrated ability to manage business requirements, product backlogs, and delivery roadmaps.
• Experience collaborating directly with business stakeholders and cross-functional technical teams.
• Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Energy, Finance, or Quantitative Finance; alternatively, a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working with energy trading data, commodity markets, or Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems.
• Familiarity with power and gas markets, trading positions, pricing, P&L, or asset-related data.
• Experience with modern cloud data platforms, data warehouses, or lakehouse architectures.
• Knowledge of Agile delivery methodologies and DevOps practices.
• Experience supporting enterprise-scale data transformation initiatives.
