Senior Core Infrastructure Engineer, OCI Networking

Oracle•Nashville, TN
•$79,200 - $209,500

About The Position

The Senior Core Infrastructure Engineer will join Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s Virtual Networking Control Plane organization, which manages networking resources across virtual and functional layers and serves internal OCI customers and external customers using virtual networking APIs and workflows. The Virtual Networking team delivers Network-as-a-Service for planning, provisioning, lifecycle management, and security of customer network infrastructure, combining virtual-network flexibility with the manageability and control of a software-defined network. The role focuses on designing, implementing, operating, and improving scalable, reliable, secure cloud networking systems. It includes developing distributed systems for hyperscale data processing and high throughput; designing for elasticity, fault tolerance, availability, and correctness; establishing performance telemetry and testing; troubleshooting production systems and supporting incidents; and automating cloud infrastructure and change management. The position also includes mentoring others and participating in operational support rotations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and implementation of components of scalable distributed systems, and begin architecting those components, including use of distributed state management tools.
  • Optimize code and systems for large-scale data processing and high-throughput requirements.
  • Define scalability requirements for owned components and ensure design and implementation requirements are met.
  • Design systems for elasticity, including effective scaling up and down.
  • Use data plane platforms for large-scale data retrieval, storage, and processing.
  • Design performance and load testing.
  • Build and design fault-tolerant components and systems capable of in-service updates through redundancy, replication, and automatic failover.
  • Design systems to handle service disruptions such as network partitions while addressing consistency, availability, or partition tolerance.
  • Implement and optimize approaches to network unreliability, including load-shedding, throttling, and rate-limiting.
  • Design durable components and systems that adhere to service level objectives and set availability and durability expectations for other departmental computing services.
  • Define key performance indicators and telemetry to identify gaps or issues in running systems.
  • Build and customize moderately complex dashboards, telemetry systems, and alerting mechanisms to monitor component and system health proactively.
  • Design and implement functional and correctness requirements for features and systems in new or existing systems.
  • Design complex test scenarios, including fault-injection and brown-out testing, to evaluate system correctness.
  • Implement data replication and synchronization techniques to maintain data integrity and availability.
  • Diagnose, debug, and resolve issues in active components and systems, and mentor others in these processes.
  • Implement strategies to prevent interruptions and avoid customer or user maintenance windows when resolving issues.
  • Maintain expertise in owned components and systems to support effective troubleshooting and performance.
  • Meet operational readiness expectations through design and implementation.
  • Serve in operational support rotations and provide guidance in incident response and root cause investigations.
  • Implement security measures for multi-tenant environments, including encryption and access controls.
  • Execute remediation plans for identified security gaps.
  • Ensure cloud infrastructure complies with industry standards and regulations and keep documentation up to date.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts and tools, such as Infrastructure as Code, to manage cloud infrastructure.
  • Create and follow change management plans for patching, updating, and rolling back applications, and begin designing systems and components to automate these processes.
