Senior Computational Scientist / Engineer, Trajectory Simulation

Triton Systems, Inc.•Chelmsford, MA
•$120 - $150

About The Position

Triton Systems, Inc. is seeking a Senior Computational Scientist / Engineer to provide technical leadership on research and development efforts within its Applied Computational Engineering group. The role focuses on advancing efficient, high-fidelity simulations of atmospheric and orbital flight, improving accuracy while reducing computational resources. The successful candidate will guide a small technical team, coordinate academic and industry collaborators, and work with a program manager to plan and execute objectives supporting Department of Defense national security efforts. The position also involves turning prototype numerical algorithms into secure, high-performance, modular, production-ready simulation software that integrates with other systems through well-defined APIs. Candidates with 7 or more years of experience may be considered at the Senior Scientist or Senior Engineer level; exceptional candidates with 5 or more years may be considered at a level just below Senior. The role includes technical project leadership and execution; development and verification of numerical methods and flight physics models; scientific software engineering in C++; customer and partner engagement; technical reporting and presentations; and compliance with export-control and information-security requirements. Triton Systems is a U.S. Government contractor headquartered in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Interested candidates must be U.S. citizens. Offers are contingent on satisfying federal identity and employment eligibility requirements, and continued employment may be contingent on a background check if the employee receives access to CUI.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship and an active Secret clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain one.
  • Deep understanding of applied mathematics, including ordinary differential equations, numerical analysis, and numerical integration methods.
  • Strong foundation in classical mechanics and dynamics relevant to flight and orbital trajectories.
  • Strong proficiency in C++ for scientific or high-performance computing, with working competency in Python, MATLAB, and Java.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, such as serving as a technical lead or task lead on funded R&D projects.
  • Experience interfacing with clients and managing customers, including leading technical meetings and presentations.
  • Experience coordinating partners, subcontractors, or academic collaborators and delegating work to small technical teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and a record of delivering contract deliverables on time.
  • Excellent technical writing skills, including reports, proposals, and documentation.
  • Experience with source control such as Git or Subversion, Agile development, and secure coding practices.
  • 5–7 years of relevant experience in computational modeling, simulation, or scientific software, including technical leadership; candidates with 7+ years may be considered at Senior level, and exceptional candidates with 5+ years may be considered below Senior.
  • MS or Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Computational Science, or a related field is strongly preferred; a BS with equivalent experience is considered.
  • Ability to satisfy federal requirements regarding proof of identity and the lawful right to work in the United States.
  • Ability to satisfy a background check if continuing employment involves access to Confidential Unclassified Information (CUI).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with trajectory simulation, flight dynamics, 6-DOF modeling, or orbital mechanics.
  • Experience with power series or Taylor series methods for ordinary differential equations.
  • Experience with federated or distributed simulation frameworks.
  • Experience with defense modeling and simulation.
  • Experience with parallel computing, GPU programming such as CUDA, or HPC environments.
  • Record of successful SBIR/STTR or other government R&D proposals.
  • Publications, presentations, or patents in a relevant technical area.
  • Experience applying AI/ML methods to scientific computing problems.
  • Familiarity with DoD cyber compliance, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and direction on computational simulation projects from approach through delivery.
  • Partner with the Program Manager to plan, schedule, and execute objectives, tracking milestones, risks, and resources.
  • Help maintain project schedules and ensure high-quality, timely deliverables.
  • Delegate and oversee tasks for small teams of engineers and academic collaborators, providing direction and technical review.
  • Interface with government customers, supporting and leading meetings, technical reviews, and demonstrations.
  • Coordinate with academic, subcontractor, and industry partners, managing tasking and integrating contributions.
  • Prepare and own technical reports, presentations, and contract deliverables.
  • Contribute to and lead proposal efforts and identify transition and commercialization opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with export-control (ITAR/EAR) and information-security requirements.
  • Develop, analyze, and optimize numerical algorithms for trajectory simulations, including high-order integration methods for ordinary differential equations.
  • Perform convergence, stability, and error analysis to achieve target accuracy with fewer time steps and lower computational cost.
  • Model atmospheric and orbital flight physics, including equations of motion, gravity, aerodynamics, and coordinate-frame transformations.
  • Verify and validate algorithm accuracy and performance against established simulation tools and benchmark scenarios.
  • Apply AI/ML methods where useful for acceleration, surrogate modeling, or analysis.
  • Implement numerical methods in robust, efficient, maintainable C++ code.
  • Mature research code into secure, optimized, clean, modular, production-ready software.
  • Apply performance techniques such as parallelization, vectorization, or GPU acceleration.
  • Design software for integration within distributed simulation environments.
