Senior Computational Research Scientist

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital•Memphis, TN
•$104,000 - $186,160•Onsite

About The Position

The Senior Computational Research Scientist leads, performs, and develops computational research projects under minimal supervision. The role is in the Luber Lab within the Department of Radiology, which develops agentic workflows and foundation models at hospital-system scale. The lab aims to identify algorithmic interventions and target trials that reduce excess mortality with minimal implementation overhead by integrating EHR, imaging, and omics data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience with a bachelor’s degree; alternatively, at least 5 years with a master’s degree or at least 2 years with a PhD.
  • Publication output roughly equivalent to 1–2 first-author papers with an impact factor greater than 10, or equivalent contribution to other research outputs.
  • Prior experience in computational research techniques and processes.
  • Proven performance in an earlier or comparable role.
  • Ability to think critically, draw insights, connect information, adapt to change, and recover from setbacks.
  • Ability to apply expertise independently with limited guidance, analyze data critically, conduct root-cause analysis, and develop solutions to challenges.
  • Strong communication skills, including explaining complex ideas to diverse audiences, presenting information clearly, adapting communication to the audience, and engaging with stakeholders across levels.
  • Ability to set and meet ambitious targets, anticipate roadblocks, use data to identify underperformance, and take corrective action.
  • Knowledge of the scientific domain and associated informatics subdomain, including the ability to translate between scientific and engineering domains.
  • Ability to solve complex problems independently and apply domain and data-science knowledge to propose solutions and assess data and results.
  • Ability to use advanced statistical modeling, machine learning, coding, software maintenance, computational pipelines, data visualization, and other computational research procedures to execute research approaches.
  • Understanding of computational research methodologies and operations, including independently executing research procedures and handling process- and quality-related escalations.
  • Ability to convey research findings to appropriate audiences, prioritize data for presentations and publications, and draft portions of documents.
  • Technical and scientific expertise in experiment design, issue identification, and practical application of research methodologies, including work with new technologies.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD.
  • Experience and publication contributions consistent with the stated publication-output guideline.

Responsibilities

  • Lead computationally focused scientific research projects with minimal supervision from the PI and develop new computational methods.
  • Identify, process, organize, interpret, review, and report relevant data.
  • Direct data collection.
  • Present research to colleagues inside and outside the institution and draft complex manuscripts with minimal supervision, as required.
  • Regularly train and oversee others in computational research and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet department and institutional goals and objectives.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
