Senior Computational Research Scientist

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital•Memphis, TN
•$104,000 - $186,160

About The Position

The Senior Computational Research Scientist leads, performs, and develops computational research projects under minimal supervision. The role is with the Luber Lab in the Department of Radiology, which develops agentic workflows and foundation models at hospital-system scale. The lab aims to identify algorithmic interventions and target trials that reduce excess mortality with the lowest possible implementation overhead by ingesting EHR, imaging, and omics data. The position applies computational research methods, statistical modeling, machine learning, coding, and related procedures to achieve research outcomes. It also involves developing computational methods, interpreting and reporting data, directing data collection, communicating research findings, and training and overseeing others.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience with a bachelor's degree; alternatively, at least 5 years with a master's degree or at least 2 years with a PhD.
  • Prior experience in computational research techniques and processes.
  • Proven performance in an earlier or comparable role.
  • Publication output roughly equivalent to 1–2 first-author papers with impact factor greater than 10, or equivalent contribution to other research outputs.
  • Critical thinking and the ability to draw insights, connect information, and reach meaningful conclusions from data.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and skills within the area of expertise to deliver tasks with limited guidance and independently solve complex problems.
  • Ability to conduct root-cause analysis, adapt to change, recover from setbacks, and develop viable plans to move forward.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively to diverse audiences, present information clearly and appropriately, and influence others to consider different perspectives.
  • Ability to set ambitious targets, follow through, achieve results, anticipate roadblocks, and find workable solutions with partners.
  • Knowledge of the scientific domain and associated informatics subdomain, including the ability to translate between scientific and engineering domains.
  • Ability to apply domain and data science knowledge to propose solutions, assess data and result quality, and answer domain questions from early-career staff.
  • Ability to use advanced statistical modeling, machine learning, coding, software maintenance, computational pipelines, data visualization, and other computational research procedures to identify and execute research approaches.
  • Ability to understand research requirements and independently execute relevant computational research procedures and address process or quality escalations.
  • Ability to convey research findings using appropriate data and narrative to support decision-making, and to engage with cross-functional, senior, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritize data for presentations and publications, present technical and scientific insights in a structured way, and draft portions of documents.
  • Technical and scientific expertise in the relevant area, including experiment design and issue identification, with the ability to apply expertise strategically and practically toward research outcomes.
  • Ability to independently work with new technologies and bring technologies to peers and leaders for consideration.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or PhD.
