Senior Compliance Test Engineer

Heron Power•Scotts Valley, CA
•$120,000 - $150,000

About The Position

Heron Power is a startup developing power electronics for the electric grid, initially focusing on converters (inverters and rectifiers) for connecting large-scale renewables, storage, and loads. The company describes its environment as dynamic, collaborative, and driven by first-principles engineering. The Senior Compliance Test Engineer identifies regulatory and technical requirements that Heron products must satisfy to reach market. Working with the design engineering team, the engineer demonstrates product compliance, supports certification, and enables entry into target markets. The role covers compliance planning and execution, in-house pre-compliance testing, coordination with NRTLs and third-party laboratories, test documentation, test setup development, and failure investigation.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of experience in regulatory and compliance certification for solar, wind, battery, or other power-electronics products.
  • Working knowledge of standards such as UL 1741, IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, IEC 62477-1, UL 347, or similar.
  • Experience with high-voltage test equipment such as hipot equipment, partial-discharge systems, and impulse generators; power analyzers; oscilloscopes; and data-acquisition systems.
  • Experience working with NRTLs such as UL, CSA, TÜV, and Intertek on certification projects.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively amid ambiguity and use first-principles engineering to find creative solutions to difficult problems.
  • Ability to remain engaged, proactive, and positive under pressure; take ownership of assignments; and accept accountability.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Hands-on experience designing and operating test equipment and data-acquisition systems, including oscilloscopes, power and spectrum analyzers, and data loggers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing or testing medium-voltage systems (for example, 5 kV–35 kV), including insulation coordination, clearance and creepage, and partial-discharge considerations.
  • Experience with manufacturing processes and material selection for high-power assemblies, such as busbars, potting, conformal coating, and high-voltage connectors.
  • Experience developing DFMEA, PFMEA, and HARA for complex hardware design and manufacturing environments.
  • Experience participating in product-relevant standards committees.
  • Hands-on experience with test automation using Python, LabVIEW, or embedded scripting for power-hardware validation.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret UL, IEC, ISO, and other regulatory requirements and translate them into test plans, procedures, and pass/fail criteria for product certification and market entry.
  • Plan and conduct safety, performance, and environmental compliance testing, including dielectric withstand, partial discharge, impulse, insulation resistance, temperature rise, abnormal/fault, and grid-interconnection tests.
  • Conduct in-house pre-compliance testing to identify design issues early and reduce formal certification risk.
  • Coordinate and support witness testing, TPTDP, and CTDP programs with NRTLs and third-party laboratories, serving as Heron's technical point of contact during test campaigns.
  • Prepare traceable test reports, data packages, and certification evidence that meet NRTL and ISO/IEC 17025 expectations.
  • Design, build, and validate test setups, fixtures, and automation for medium- and high-voltage power electronics.
  • Investigate and analyze test failures with design engineering and drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation, including salary and equity.
  • Benefits are offered, but specific benefits are not listed.
