Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

CHAOS Industries•San Francisco, CA
•$140,000 - $240,000•Onsite

About The Position

CHAOS Industries is hiring a Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer to join a small, collaborative team in San Francisco. The team builds the cloud platform supporting advanced radar systems. The role involves designing, building, and operating infrastructure and backend services that transfer mission-critical sensor data from deployed radars to operators. The platform is in production and expanding, and the engineer will scale it as the sensor fleet, customers, and deployments grow.

Requirements

  • Experience building and operating production infrastructure in at least one major cloud (Azure, AWS, or GCP), defined as code with Terraform, Pulumi, Bicep, or CloudFormation.
  • Experience running containerized production workloads with Docker on a managed platform such as Azure Container Apps, AWS ECS or Fargate, Google Cloud Run, or Kubernetes.
  • Strong cloud networking fundamentals, including virtual networks, subnets, routing, DNS, load balancers, private endpoints, and firewalls.
  • Experience building and operating production backend services in Python, Go, or a similar language, and understanding concurrency, async I/O, connection pooling, and resource limits under load.
  • Fluency in distributed systems, including consistency and replication, partitioning, caching, back-pressure, idempotency, system failure modes, and graceful degradation.
  • Experience scaling a production system well beyond its original design and resolving issues that arise during that growth.
  • Ability to build securely by default, including least-privilege access, keeping secrets out of code, and maintaining patched, hardened systems, and to explain the trade-offs involved.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Azure Government, AWS GovCloud, or other regulated environments such as FedRAMP, CMMC, NIST 800-171, or NIST 800-53.
  • Experience with real-time and streaming data systems, including WebSockets, server-sent events, pub/sub, and message queues.
  • Experience with identity and cloud security, including Entra ID, OAuth 2.0/OIDC, managed identities, service-to-service authentication, and policy as code.

Responsibilities

  • Design and operate Azure infrastructure as code with Terraform, including networking, Azure Container Apps, managed databases, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Build and own high-throughput Python (FastAPI) backend services and their data layer, using PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB, Redis, and Cosmos DB to ingest and stream real-time sensor data.
  • Work with engineering teams across the company to define the architecture of the next generation of the platform.
  • Own platform security, reliability, and observability, including identity and access, secrets management, network isolation, Datadog monitoring and alerting, and incident response.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits fully paid for by the company.
  • 401(k) with a 50% company match on up to 6% of pay.
  • Flexible spending account (FSA) and health savings account (HSA).
  • Life insurance.
  • Free daily lunch while working onsite.
  • Fully stocked kitchen.
  • Unlimited PTO.
  • Casual dress code.
  • Generous pre-IPO stock option grants.
  • Relocation assistance.
  • Annual bonuses described as coming soon.
