Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

Apple•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

The Synthetic Data Group (SDG) Cloud Infrastructure team at Apple builds secure, high-performance cloud services for machine learning, generative AI, and synthetic data initiatives. The Cloud Infrastructure Engineer will architect, develop, and operate infrastructure powering Apple’s Machine Learning and Synthetic Data Platform, including scalable services and data pipelines for large-scale data processing and management. The role addresses distributed-systems challenges involving storage and retrieval, low-latency and high-throughput computation, security, and reliability. The engineer will own cloud services across system architecture, APIs, backend implementation, and infrastructure-as-code deployment. They will work with machine learning engineers, data scientists, and other engineering teams to integrate algorithms and data sources, and use quantitative analysis to improve performance, cost, scalability, and reliability. The role also includes exploring technologies, influencing product direction and technical architecture, mentoring engineers, and contributing to Agile development and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience.
  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience building and operating cloud infrastructure or distributed systems at scale.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services, including EC2, EKS, S3, ELB, and SQS.
  • Experience with Kubernetes-based container orchestration and production operations.
  • Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
  • Strong Go (Golang) programming skills for systems and service development.
  • Proficiency in at least one additional full-stack service development language, such as JavaScript or Python.
  • Experience designing and building production microservices architectures.
  • Production experience with relational databases such as Postgres and NoSQL datastores.
  • Ability to use quantitative approaches—including modeling, iterative prototyping, analysis, and tools—to design and develop robust, secure, high-performance cloud services.
  • Track record of influencing cross-functional architects and high-performance teams to define architecture.
  • Exposure to Agile development methodologies.
  • Experience designing and building applications using container and serverless technologies.
  • Exposure to Agile software development and DevOps practices such as infrastructure as code, continuous integration, and automated deployment.
  • Experience with CI tools such as Jenkins.
  • Strong practical application development experience on Linux systems.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with film and game development pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, build, and operate secure, scalable cloud infrastructure and services supporting machine learning and synthetic data platforms.
  • Design and implement microservices and APIs, from system design through production deployment and operations.
  • Build and optimize data storage, messaging, and service-to-service communication for high throughput and low latency, using technologies such as S3, Postgres, and SQS.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code and automation, including Terraform, Helm charts, and Kubernetes manifests.
  • Apply quantitative methods, modeling, prototyping, analysis, and tooling to improve performance, cost, and reliability while meeting experience goals.
  • Drive cross-functional architecture alignment and influence partner teams and senior technical stakeholders through design reviews and technical proposals.
  • Mentor engineers and establish engineering best practices for robustness, security, testing, and operational excellence.
  • Participate in Agile development workflows and contribute to continuous improvement in planning, execution, and delivery.
  • Collaborate with machine learning engineers, data scientists, and other engineering teams to integrate algorithms and data sources.
  • Explore alternative technologies, prototype solutions, and influence product direction for internal customers.
