About The Position

The Senior Cloud Database Administrator is a key technical resource for implementing solutions and migrating cloud-centric database platforms. The role translates designs and technical specifications into database services that are implemented, configured, secured, monitored, and optimized to meet business requirements. Its technical scope includes database architecture and administration, installation and upgrades, performance tuning and troubleshooting, backup and restoration, high availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR), access controls, automation, and support for system and integration testing. The successful candidate is self-driven, takes ownership, and continually develops their knowledge of cloud and data-management technologies. The role is remote within the U.S.; employees hired in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area must work in the office at least four days per week. Remote employees must follow UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy. Travel of 50%–70% may be expected depending on business needs and permissible travel conditions.

  • At least 3 years of experience with database administration concepts, including installation and configuration, patching and upgrades, access controls, auditing, encryption, and performance optimization across one or more RDBMS platforms (such as SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle, or MySQL) and/or cloud-managed database services.
  • At least 3 years of implementation experience with enterprise data and cloud initiatives, such as cloud-managed database services and/or cloud-native data platforms on Azure, AWS, and/or Google Cloud, including HA/DR, backup and restore, monitoring, and security configurations.
  • At least 3 years of experience working on database administration and/or platform teams, including offshore teams, through a product life cycle covering requirements, design, build, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Excellent understanding of database design and administration concepts, including SQL, indexing, statistics, query optimization, schema management, and operational patterns for reliability, scalability, and performance.
  • Experience with configuration management using GitHub and/or other version control tools.
  • Proficiency in software delivery using Agile, including CI/CD and DevOps, with tools such as Jira, Rally, Aha, GitHub, and Selenium.
  • Proficiency using AI tools such as Claude and CodeX.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines, follow development standards, and effectively raise critical issues with clients.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel 50%–70% based on business needs and permissible travel conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Cloud database administration certification.
  • At least 3 years of experience designing and implementing healthcare data and information-management solutions, with familiarity with healthcare payer/provider data such as Membership, Enrollment, Claims (Medical, Pharmacy, etc.), and Clinical data.
  • Experience administering cloud-managed database services such as Azure SQL/MI, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, and Amazon RDS/Aurora, including maintenance windows, scaling, monitoring, and cost/performance optimization.
  • Experience with database monitoring and observability tools, including native cloud monitoring and/or third-party tools, and building actionable alerting and runbooks.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and automation for database provisioning and configuration, such as Terraform, ARM/Bicep, or CloudFormation, and CI/CD patterns for database changes.
  • Experience implementing database security controls such as encryption at rest and in transit, key management, auditing, and least-privilege access in regulated environments.
  • Experience designing and executing database HA/DR strategies, including replication, clustering, and multi-zone/region configurations, and conducting resilience and failover testing.
  • Experience planning and executing database migrations and upgrades, including on-premises-to-cloud and cloud-to-cloud migrations, cutover planning, validation, and rollback strategies.
  • Understanding of cloud and platform architecture patterns that affect database operations, such as containerization, microservices, and event-driven systems, including implications for data persistence, resiliency, and performance.
  • Knowledge of HL7 and EDI transactions and related formats, including FHIR APIs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership in database platform engineering and administration for modernizing legacy databases to cloud database services, including migrations, upgrades, and operational readiness.
  • Navigate ambiguity, identify options to resolve constraints, mitigate implementation risks, and define solutions to implementation challenges with minimal supervision.
  • Implement data access and security patterns aligned with applicable regulatory and compliance standards, including HIPAA, PHI, PII, location-based data restrictions, and contractual requirements.
