Senior Business Applications Engineer

Horizon3
•$150,000 - $200,000

About The Position

Horizon3 is seeking a Senior Engineer to serve as the technical expert on its Business Applications (BizApps) team, the operational backbone for organizational collaboration, system connectivity, and process automation. The team partners with departments across the company and owns and administers Jira, Jira Service Management (JSM), Confluence, Rovo, Loom, Glean, and Workato. Solutions are expected to follow least-privilege access, data privacy, and auditable data-flow practices. The role partners with business teams to turn pain points into working solutions. It gathers requirements, applies human-centered, API-first, and secure-by-design principles, selects appropriate technologies from the Atlassian suite, Workato, custom AWS automation tooling, and AI platforms, and owns solutions from discovery through production support. This is an individual contributor role reporting to the Senior Manager, Business Applications, and serves as a technical escalation point and mentor for IT Admins and AI Admins.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience owning solutions from requirements gathering through production support and leading complex, high-impact projects with little to no supervision.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining integrations on an iPaaS platform, including error handling, monitoring, and secure credential handling; Workato is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of APIs, webhooks, data models, REST, and event-driven integration patterns, with the ability to write custom code or scripts where iPaaS is insufficient.
  • Hands-on experience engineering workflows, custom fields, and automations in Jira, JSM, and Confluence, or comparable work management and ITSM platforms.
  • Experience gathering requirements from non-technical teams and translating them into design documents and testable acceptance criteria.
  • Understanding of RBAC, least-privilege access, service account practices, and data privacy as they apply to integrations and automations.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or administrators through design guidance and work review.
  • Ability to clearly explain design decisions and tradeoffs in writing to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in IT, business systems engineering, integration, or automation engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience building and supporting production integrations or automations.
  • Experience supporting a distributed or remote-first workforce.
  • Experience with Jira, Jira Service Management, and Confluence or comparable work management and ITSM platforms.
  • Experience with Workato or a similar iPaaS platform.
  • Experience with APIs, webhooks, and REST and event-driven integration patterns.
  • Experience with a scripting or programming language for custom automation, such as Python, JavaScript, or Ruby.
  • Experience with cloud services for custom middleware, such as AWS Lambda, API Gateway, and EventBridge, or similar.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building governed self-service or citizen development programs that enable business teams to automate safely within guardrails.
  • Experience designing JSM service catalogs, request types, and SLAs that measurably improved response and resolution times.
  • Experience building agents, Projects, Skills, or Gems on Glean, Rovo, Claude, Gemini, or AWS Bedrock for real business use cases.
  • Experience building audit-ready integrations in an environment subject to SOC 2 or similar compliance requirements.
  • Track record of developing administrators or junior engineers into higher-scope roles.
  • Relevant Atlassian, Workato, AWS, or similar certifications.
  • Experience in high-growth SaaS or cybersecurity companies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead stakeholder discovery through interviews and process walkthroughs to define problems, affected users, and success measures.
  • Translate business pain points into scoped problem statements and recommend suitable approaches, explaining tradeoffs in speed, maintainability, and risk.
  • Design solutions using human-centered, API-first, event-driven, and secure-by-design principles, and document architecture decisions.
  • Own solutions end to end, including design, building, testing, release, monitoring, support, and retirement.
  • Build and maintain Workato recipes and connectors with resilient error handling, end-to-end monitoring, and auditable data flows.
  • Build custom automation tooling and AWS middleware when native features and Workato do not meet requirements.
  • Design and evolve complex workflows, custom fields, automations, and service management configurations in Jira, JSM, and Confluence.
  • Architect and evolve the governed Workato citizen development platform, including frameworks, templates, reusable connectors, service accounts, and sandboxes; review team-built automations against guardrails.
  • Enforce least-privilege access using role-based access control, appropriate read/write scopes, and service accounts, in partnership with Security and IT Engineering.
  • Serve as the technical escalation point for IT Admins and AI Admins, review their work, and mentor them toward engineering-level scope.
  • Partner with AI Admins and the Senior Manager to apply Glean, Rovo, Claude, Gemini, and Bedrock capabilities to complex business automation needs.
  • Write runbooks, design documents, and handoff materials so Admins can support solutions.
  • Report delivery velocity, integration reliability, and adoption to the Senior Manager and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate integrity, commitment to process improvement, and customer satisfaction.

Benefits

  • Equity package in the form of stock options for full-time roles.
  • Health insurance for employees and their families.
  • Vision insurance for employees and their families.
  • Dental insurance for employees and their families.
  • Flexible vacation policy.
  • Generous parental leave.
  • Competitive compensation.
