About The Position

FutureFit AI is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build and operate the backend systems that support its platform, with a focus on complex integrations and platform reliability. The role begins with a demanding bidirectional data sync with an external partner and will develop reusable patterns and infrastructure for reliable integrations across the platform. The engineer will build scalable systems, reduce manual operational work, and help the team resolve production issues quickly and confidently. This is a hands-on role involving complex integrations with government and enterprise partners, asynchronous workflows, backend services, AWS Lambda functions, internal tools, and observability. The engineer will work closely with engineering, customer success, support, and external vendors. The position is remote across the United States and Canada, with at least five to six hours of daily overlap with the EST-based team. Candidates in Toronto may optionally use the company's office. Travel may be expected up to once per quarter for off-sites and team gatherings.

Requirements

  • 5 to 8+ years of senior-level, hands-on experience in backend, platform, or integration engineering, focused on reliable systems for complex external integrations.
  • Strong experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining complex data integrations at enterprise or government scale; experience limited to SSO, API configuration, or cloud deployments is not sufficient.
  • Strong understanding of asynchronous workloads and processing.
  • Experience developing reliable, production-grade backend systems.
  • Strong debugging skills using logs, metrics, and tracing.
  • Proficiency with at least one SQL or NoSQL database in production.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fully remote environment.
  • At least five to six hours of daily overlap with the EST-based team.

Nice To Haves

  • AWS experience, including Lambda, EventBridge, or SQS; Azure experience is transferable.
  • Frontend or full-stack development experience.
  • Experience with financial, banking, or similarly complex data integrations.
  • GraphQL API design experience.
  • MongoDB or DynamoDB experience for async state management.
  • Experience with legacy enterprise or government systems.
  • Multi-tenant architecture experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain deep, bidirectional data integrations with government and enterprise partners, including partners with limited documentation.
  • Build reliable asynchronous processing using queues, retries, idempotency, and eventual consistency patterns, handling duplicates, missing dependencies, and validation failures defensively.
  • Eliminate categories of manual support work by building backend services, Lambda functions, and internal tools that help non-technical teammates diagnose and resolve issues.
  • Implement structured logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting to surface issues before support tickets arise.
  • Debug and maintain production systems, including code written by others.
  • Establish reusable integration standards and infrastructure for the engineering team.
  • Work with external vendors on API changes and coordinated deployments.
  • Build relationships with engineering, customer success, and support teams and learn the integration systems they use.
  • Use MongoDB queries, CloudWatch Logs Insights, and SQL queries to track async jobs, trace distributed workflows, and validate data.
  • Ship integration fixes and improvements, and lead automation initiatives that reduce manual intervention.
  • Work with support to validate automation outcomes, identify further opportunities, document runbooks, and create tools for diagnosing common issues.
  • Measure and communicate automation impact, including changes in support tickets, manual intervention time, data consistency, and error rates.
  • Participate in architectural discussions and platform planning, mentor engineers on reliability patterns, and present technical learnings to the engineering team.

Benefits

  • Unlimited PTO
  • Health care
  • Career development budget
  • Technology reimbursement
  • Flexible schedules built on trust
  • Work directly with the founding team
