About The Position

The Weather Company is seeking a Senior Enterprise Architect to connect strategic architecture vision with hands-on technical execution. The role defines and maintains target-state architecture across enterprise platforms, business capabilities, and engineering domains. It involves direct work in codebases and infrastructure, including prototyping, creating shared reference implementations, resolving cross-system incidents, and implementing cloud, DevOps, and CI/CD foundations. The architect also serves as a technical anchor by mentoring teams, establishing enterprise standards, and balancing technical debt with long-term business needs. The position translates business strategy into executable architecture and transition roadmaps, owns architecture patterns and standards, and defines integration and data architecture. It also assesses existing systems and recommends modernization or rationalization, contributes production code and shared libraries, improves DevOps capabilities, and participates in delivery and incident response when architectural expertise is needed. The role partners with security, privacy, and compliance functions and creates and maintains architecture documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or commensurate experience.
  • 5+ years in system design and software delivery, including 3+ years in an enterprise, solution, or domain architecture role across multiple teams or platforms.
  • Practical fluency using AI-assisted development tools in day-to-day delivery, with judgment about their benefits, risks, and the need to review their output.
  • Recent, direct experience writing and shipping production code and building or operating CI/CD and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience defining target-state architectures and multi-quarter transition roadmaps that were delivered against.
  • Strong understanding of software design patterns and architectural principles, such as 12 Factor, SOLID, DDD, EDA, SOA, and microservices, and judgment about when to apply them.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise architecture frameworks and capability modeling, such as TOGAF, ArchiMate, and business capability maps.
  • Extensive experience with AWS, including cost, resilience, and multi-account or multi-region considerations.
  • Practical competency sufficient to independently build and debug CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and infrastructure as code; technologies include Kubernetes (EKS), Terraform, Helm, ArgoCD, Grafana, and Prometheus.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages, including at least one object-oriented language; examples include Golang, Python, and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Strong competency in SQL and NoSQL databases, data modeling, and data flows across system boundaries, specifically MongoDB and PostgreSQL.
  • Expertise in API design and integration architecture, including REST, event-driven and streaming patterns, and contract and versioning strategy.
  • Experience creating and maintaining architecture documentation, such as UML, C4, and ADRs, for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Technical leadership capability, including mentoring, facilitating cross-team collaboration, and influencing decisions without direct authority.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to communicate at both executive and deep technical levels.
  • Active or prior U.S. security clearance, or eligibility to obtain one.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with large-scale platform modernization, migration, or consolidation programs.
  • Experience in performance optimization, profiling, and tuning of distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with data platform and analytics architecture, such as warehousing, lakehouse, and streaming ingestion.
  • Experience architecting AI/ML workloads, including model serving, feature data, and inference cost management.
  • Exposure to FinOps practices and portfolio-level cloud cost optimization.
  • Background in high-volume, low-latency, or geospatial/time-series data systems.
  • Experience working within security and compliance regimes such as SOC 2, GDPR, or PCI.
  • Experience architecting systems for government or defense customers, including deployment into accredited environments at defined DoD impact levels (IL2 through IL6 under the DoD Cloud Computing SRG).
  • Familiarity with secure and restricted military network environments, including segmented or air-gapped enclaves, cross-domain solutions, NIPRNet/SIPRNet connectivity, and limited or intermittent egress, and their effects on integration, data movement, and deployment architecture.
  • Working knowledge of federal security and authorization frameworks such as FedRAMP, NIST SP 800-53 and 800-171, RMF and the ATO process, STIG hardening, and CMMC, including experience producing required architecture documentation.
  • Certifications in relevant technologies or frameworks, such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Professional Architect, or TOGAF.
  • Contributions to open-source projects or technical communities, or conference speaking engagements.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain enterprise-level architecture spanning platforms, domains, and business capabilities, ensuring individual system designs form a coherent whole.
  • Translate business strategy and capability needs into target-state architectures, transition roadmaps, and sequencing plans for engineering teams.
  • Own reference architectures, patterns, and enterprise standards for designated domains; drive adoption and lead design review and governance forums.
  • Define integration and data architecture, including API strategy, event and messaging patterns, master data ownership, and system-of-record boundaries.
  • Assess the current-state landscape for redundancy, technical debt, and integration gaps; recommend rationalization, modernization, or build-versus-buy paths, making cost, risk, and operational trade-offs explicit.
  • Work hands-on in codebases and infrastructure by prototyping architectural approaches, building reference implementations and shared libraries, and contributing production code.
  • Implement and improve DevOps capabilities, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, containerization, and observability.
  • Support delivery and incident response by debugging cross-system failures, profiling performance, and implementing remediation.
  • Partner with security, privacy, and compliance functions to address regulatory, resilience, and data-protection requirements in architecture.
  • Guide and mentor development teams, solution and platform architects, and senior engineers through architectural direction, design review, and code review.
  • Create and maintain enterprise architecture documentation, such as C4 diagrams, capability models, domain and system landscape maps, and ADRs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
