Senior Acoustics Engineer - Bose Labs

Bose Corporation•Framingham, MA
•$180,900 - $248,700•Hybrid

About The Position

Bose Labs is seeking a Senior Acoustic Engineer to help establish and enhance physical reference designs for wearable applications, including audio, noise cancellation, and voice experiences. The role spans multiple projects with near- and long-term goals, and combines leadership of small multidisciplinary teams with individual contributions in acoustic modeling, data analysis, laboratory measurements, technology proposals, and technical mentoring. Positioned between research and product development, the engineer translates foundational technologies and technical insights into practical, scalable engineering solutions. These solutions may support licensable technologies for a range of wearable products and Bose-branded product development. The successful candidate will work across several simultaneous projects in a small cross-functional team, using analytical, empirical, and hands-on methods to address ambiguous problems. The role collaborates with research, product development, and business-unit organizations to deliver acoustic and mechanical reference designs, identify system-level tradeoffs and risks, and advance wearable technologies. The primary work location is Framingham, Massachusetts; other Bose work locations may be available. The role is listed as hybrid.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in acoustical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 10 or more years of relevant professional experience in acoustical engineering, including direct design, analysis, and testing of high-performance audio products.
  • Expert problem-solving ability, including scoping, planning, and leading cross-functional investigations of challenging problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop concepts, methods, or tools while working through ill-defined problems.
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of headphone and earbud acoustic structures and enclosure and porting design.
  • Analysis experience with lumped-element modeling and finite-element and/or boundary-element modeling.
  • Experience designing or specifying requirements for acoustic components, including micro-drivers, MEMS microphones, MEMS vibration sensors, foams, and meshes.
  • Deep understanding of acoustic measurement systems and the ability to develop measurement processes and techniques as needed.
  • Critical listening skills and knowledge of fundamental psychoacoustic effects for subjective evaluation of music, noise cancellation, and voice.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB or an equivalent environment for measurement, data analysis, and visualization.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to technical peers and non-technical stakeholders, verbally and in written reports and documents.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in acoustical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with COMSOL, Simulink, or SIMSPEAKER.
  • Experience with active noise cancellation technology.
  • Familiarity with signal-processing techniques for beamforming, speech processing, echo cancellation, and audio rendering.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-functional engineering teams to invent, prototype, and prove technologies for wearable devices and customer experiences.
  • Contribute to documentation standards for existing and new mechanical/acoustical reference designs to accelerate development and adoption of licensable technologies.
  • Create simulation models and tools to predict acoustic system behavior and help future teams evaluate design alternatives.
  • Design and conduct acoustic experiments to verify or supplement simulation results.
  • Measure transducer components, subsystems, and full concept assemblies, and analyze the data to develop conclusions.
  • Establish measurement and design techniques or processes that accelerate adoption and scaling of new capabilities.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, DSP, electrical, and software engineers to deliver end-to-end reference designs and account for tradeoffs and dependencies.
  • Identify system-level tradeoffs, risks, guardrails, and dependencies for product development teams.
  • Present concepts, experimental results, recommendations, and technical risks through reviews, documentation, and stakeholder demonstrations.
  • Coordinate across research, product development, and business-unit organizations to align on deliverables.
  • Propose and champion technology opportunities for future wearable product advancements.
  • Mentor teammates and contribute individual technical work in acoustic modeling, data analysis, and laboratory measurement.
