Acoustics Research Engineer

HX5, LLC•Brooklyn, OH

About The Position

HX5 is seeking a part-time, temporary Acoustics Research Engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The role focuses on analyzing noise generated by transonic jet flows, particularly guided jet waves (GJWs) in a Mach 0.95 jet. The selected candidate will use COMSOL Multiphysics to reproduce and validate reported GJW phenomena and investigate how acoustic excitation parameters affect their generation, amplification, and suppression. The engineer will also assess frequency ranges, source strength scaling and superposition, source placement, and phased or multiple-source configurations as potential means of controlling upstream-propagating GJWs. Results must be documented, reported, and presented clearly and concisely. Applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residency and be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation. HX5 offers a competitive salary and benefits package.

Requirements

  • Exceptional knowledge and experience in the analysis of jet acoustics.
  • Specialized experience using COMSOL to evaluate guided jet wave physics.
  • Strong analytical skills for interpreting complex datasets from test campaigns.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a record of high-quality publications and presentations.
  • Ability to integrate effectively into multidisciplinary research teams and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • High motivation, creativity, and problem-solving ability.
  • At least a bachelor's degree from an accredited program, with relevant experience: bachelor's degree and 20 or more years; master's degree and 15 years; or Ph.D. and 10 years.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency.
  • Ability to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with federal regulations for aircraft noise emissions.
  • Familiarity with jet noise experimental measurements and analysis.
  • Familiarity with aircraft engine analysis and design.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate how acoustic excitation parameters influence the generation, amplification, and suppression of guided jet waves in a Mach 0.95 jet.
  • Reproduce and validate reported guided jet wave phenomena using COMSOL Multiphysics.
  • Identify frequency ranges in which upstream-propagating guided jet waves are maximally amplified and naturally suppressed.
  • Verify linear scaling and superposition behavior of the numerical model with respect to source strength.
  • Evaluate source placement as a control parameter for enhancing or suppressing guided jet wave modes.
  • Investigate whether phased or multiple-source configurations can suppress upstream-propagating guided jet wave modes.
  • Document, report, and present results clearly and concisely.

  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Paid holidays
  • Paid time off
  • Life insurance
  • Tuition reimbursement
