About The Position

The Senior Accountant is responsible for maintaining the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of NNDDC and its subsidiaries’ financial records. This position manages and reviews day-to-day accounting activities, including general ledger entries, reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, and periodic close processes. The Senior Accountant supports financial reporting and audits, working closely with and supervises the Bookkeeper, and provides technical accounting support to the Controller. This position focuses on execution and compliance. This is a senior technical accounting role that requires demonstrated, hands-on accounting experience. Academic training or administrative experience alone will not be sufficient for the required professional accounting experience. Full-time preferred, however we will consider candidates seeking part-time (0.5), flexible scheduling, or job-share arrangements

Requirements

  • A post-secondary degree in accounting, finance or business administration or equivalent.
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) or active enrollment in a CPA program.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of senior-level work experience, including demonstrated responsibility for: Management of staff; Preparation and review of financial statements; Management of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll; General ledger maintenance; Review and performance of reconciliations, and month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently with complex accounting records and resolving discrepancies.
  • Experience supporting external audits and preparing audit schedules and documentation.
  • Strong working knowledge of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE, IFRS)
  • Strong proficiency with Quickbooks Online, Sage 50, Caseware and Microsoft Excel
  • Able to work independently and take initiative with a strong attention to detail

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Strong ability to prioritize workloads to meet shifting tight timelines
  • Understanding of and respect for financial controls and procedures mandated by NNDDC

Responsibilities

  • Periodic review of the general ledger and accounting data.
  • Review of bank and credit card reconciliations.
  • Periodic review and preparation of financial account and amortization reconciliations.
  • Recording or delegating the recording of financial transactions as needed.
  • Review of the work of the Bookkeeper in relation to transactions recorded in the general ledger.
  • Preparation and review of journal entries.
  • Periodic review of Accounts Payable data and approval of Accounts Payable invoices where segregation of duties allows for NNDDC and its subsidiaries.
  • Selection of NNDDC and subsidiary invoices for periodic payment.
  • Review and management of the work of the Bookkeeper in relation to Accounts Payable, up to and including the point of payment.
  • Periodic review of Accounts Receivable data and approval of Accounts Receivable invoices where segregation of duties allows for NNDDC and its subsidiaries.
  • Review of the work of the Bookkeeper in relation to Accounts Receivable, including up to the point of receiving payment.
  • Periodic Accounts Receivable follow-ups for receivables for NNDDC and its subsidiaries.
  • Preparation of invoices as needed
  • Periodic communications with various customers and external parties
  • Assist in planning, directing, and coordinating all day-to-day and month-end accounting functions.
  • Assist in financial analysis for NNDDC and subsidiaries, including accounts and financial reports, budgeting and forecasting, and investments.
  • Assist in quarterly and year-end financial statements, financial reports, and working papers.
  • Support the preparation of the annual audit, review, and compilation files for NNDDC and its subsidiaries, ensuring compliance with accounting standards.
  • Assist in assessing current accounting operations.
  • Calculate, prepare, and review quarterly and annual GST returns.
  • Perform bookkeeping duties as needed.
  • Other responsibilities assigned by the Controller.
