About The Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) invites applications for the role of Security Officer, also referred to as Safety Operations Supervisor, within UNLV University Libraries. This position is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the safety and loss prevention of the University Libraries, serving faculty, staff, students, and patrons. The Safety Operations Supervisor will provide excellent customer service, supervise up to 10 student employees, and ensure the safety and security of the Lied Library and its three branches. Responsibilities include monitoring building access, conducting security checks, enforcing policies, administering first aid, and leading emergency responses in the absence of the Service Excellence and Safety Manager. The role involves direct interaction with library users and collaboration with external law enforcement agencies.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience in public contact work which included applying and implementing rules, regulations or established policies OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and maintain the safety and loss prevention of the University Libraries.
  • Provide consistent, excellent customer service.
  • Supervise up to 10 safety student employees, ensuring they are trained and prepared for various situations including building evacuations, opening/closing procedures, difficult situations, emergencies, and general inquiries.
  • Conduct regular visual checks through camera monitors and direct observation.
  • Monitor State property, displays, and individuals entering and leaving the University Library buildings, taking appropriate action according to campus and department policy.
  • Oversee buildings, checking windows, locks, doors for damage or security breaches, and follow established procedures for security or safety violations.
  • Monitor the safety of the physical condition of University Library buildings, including electrical, structural, and mechanical systems, and report failures and deficiencies.
  • Enforce University and Libraries policies, rules, and regulations by verbally warning and trespassing violators as needed.
  • Interact with other State and local law enforcement agencies and other personnel to maintain safety and security.
  • Assist all visitors by providing accurate information and directions, answering questions, explaining Libraries rules, policies, and procedures, and referring to appropriate staff or providing necessary forms.
  • Maintain proper use, control, and accountability of keys.
  • Lead building evacuations or emergency situations in the absence of the Service Excellence and Safety Manager, providing direction and leadership to Library staff on duty.
  • Provide accurate and timely emergency communications.
  • Administer first aid.
  • Coordinate efforts with local law enforcement agencies.
  • Complete required forms and reports.
