About The Position

The Security Officer 1 is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of patients, visitors, and staff at Mercyhealth facilities. This role involves patrolling buildings and grounds, responding to security calls, monitoring surveillance equipment, and investigating incidents. The officer must maintain a professional and courteous demeanor, enforce policies, and document all activities accurately. Additionally, the role may involve assisting with special events like MedFlights and verifying the identity of deceased patients and funeral home personnel. Training and development of other security staff may also be required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Basic Computer skills; Word/Outlook/Excel
  • Able to interact with customers and communicate clearly.
  • Able to manage anger, fear, hostility and violence of others following Mercyhealth principles of customer service.
  • Illinois residents are required to possess a valid FOID (Firearms Owners Identification Card) card/ or be eligible to obtain one for employment.
  • Must maintain proficiency in department-specific training annually.

Nice To Haves

  • Security experience preferred
  • Bilingual skills are preferred
  • Officers will complete department specific training (Level 3 TACT training, handcuffing, OC spray, ASP baton, and physical control tactics training, etc.) required within 12 months of hire.
  • Those assigned to House of Mercy must have a reliable source of transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Takes initiative to greet all patients, visitors, and Mercyhealth partners in a timely, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Provides a visible deterrence to crime and prohibited activities by patrolling the buildings, grounds, and parking lots.
  • Inspects doors, windows, and locks to ensure a high level of security.
  • Responds to all dispatch/security service calls and overhead emergency code calls.
  • Checks grounds and areas for cleanliness and safety.
  • Performs parking lot patrols and enforces Mercyhealth parking policy.
  • Notifies maintenance staff concerning need for repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.
  • Assists with completion of fire drills as requested.
  • Writes clear and accurate daily reports of shift activities and irregularities.
  • Provides initial investigation and documentation of incidents.
  • Orients and trains security staff at respective sites of responsibility.
  • Monitors the Mercyhealth environment using electronic security equipment (CCTV, Alarms, etc.).
  • Ensures partners and contractors display required proof of identity.
  • Ensures the safety of all during takeoff and landings of MedFlights.
  • Assists with identification of deceased patients and verification of credentials of funeral home and Medical Examiner's Office personnel.
  • Performs duties pertinent to site-specific requirements.
